Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
December 26, 2001
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Wed., Dec. 26, 2001

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: With few guests at any of the hotels – and even fewer going

fishing – it is difficult to assess conditions. The hotel boat skippers

have had a rough week with the wind. They reported a few dorado close to

shore in the Punta Pescadero area. They have also reported catching a few

roosters and sierra from the arroyo just north of Los Barilles to the Punta

Pescadero region.

.. OFFSHORE: The offshore fishing has been very difficult this week. The

skippers have been reporting the necessity of finding shelter from the wind.

They report having to stay fairly close to the shore. This has been a

comfort factor for the guests and fishermen on board. The skippers have

reported a few dorado and some action with small skipjack on the inside edge

of the blue water in the Punta Pescadero region.

.. INSHORE: Wind continues to hammer the fishing. If the wind backs off,

fishing can be good. The area has had good for sierra, jacks, ladyfish and

trumpet fish. This is due to the good numbers of baitfish in the area.

.. BEACH: If you are a diehard and just have to wet a line head, up toward

Punta Pescadero where you can find a little shelter from the wind early

morning. If the wind permits, fishing to the south has been good to

excellent in front of La Ribera. This area is holding lots of bait and the

very early mornings and late evenings have seen some good action for jacks,

roosters, and the sierra.

AIR & SEA: This week the temperatures have been quite pleasant. The daytime

highs have ranged from the low- to mid-70s with lots of sun. Evening

temperatures have been quite cool at times. They range from the low 40s to

low 50s. The early mornings have been quite cool due to the lack of cloud

cover. We have seen VERY strong north winds in the area this week making

the fishing difficult.

BILLFISH - Very little pressure because of the wind.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Right now they're from La Ribera to the lighthouse.

DORADO - A few along the color line up by Punta Pescadero.

ROOSTERFISH -Wind waves have driven most of the fish outside of casting

range.

JACK CREVALLE - Plenty of sardina to attract them.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Lots of small-to-medium off La Ribera. Just

perfect for the fly.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try any of the rock reefs near Punta Colorada.

SIERRA - This is a typical winter target.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., Dec. 26, 2001

.. IN GENERAL: Sea temperatures continue to hold and some of the panga fleet

is still reporting marlin and tuna. I heard from several trailer boaters

that were headed down for New Years, so hope springs eternal. If the weather

holds for them they should have a good trip. For those of you who don't want

to venture too far, try under the bridge at the entrance to town. (Watch

your back cast and be prepared to lose a couple of flies.)

AIR & SEA: Mid- to low-70s with cooler evenings and some wind.

MARLIN - Fair amounts reported by the panga fleet.

DORADO - If you find them, they are probably stragglers.

TUNA - Look for them mixed in with the porpoise.

YELLOWTAIL - Mostly smaller fish with a few larger ones reported up on the

26's.

CORVINA - Anything chartreuse will work.

SNOOK - Look for them deeper in the water column with the colder weather.

HALIBUT - Three to five pounders along the sandy beach west of Puerto San

Carlos.

SIERRA - Several hot spots including Punta Belcher, the entrada and entrance

to Santa Maria Bay under the birds early morning.
