Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
January 9, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Wed., Jan. 09, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: From sunup until mid-morning is the best bet considering the

windy conditions we have been experiencing. The sierra are definitely a

bonus right now and can be found wherever the sardina are pushed up against

the shore. Further out, the dorado and tuna are at both ends of the bay and

providing fair action. More marlin seem to be moving into the area, but

with few boats going out, and even less targeting them, it is difficult to

give or get a true picture of what is going on.

.. OFFSHORE: Not worth the effort.

.. INSHORE: Early morning for dorado, tuna and sierra.

.. BEACH: Sierra for sure and maybe a few jacks and roosters.

AIR & SEA: Pretty much the winter pattern now with a few days of wind and

then a couple of calm days with temperatures ranging from the high 70's to

low 60's

BILLFISH - Only an occasional fish reported.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Punta Pescadero producing the best catches. I suspect La

Ribera is as good, but boats tend to go north early so they can come home

down swell if the wind comes up.

DORADO - Shark buoys the best.

ROOSTERFISH - An occasional small one. Look for any bait within casting

range.

JACK CREVALLE - Look for them driving the bait up on the beach.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few in front of La Ribera.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - No one targeting them this week that I heard of.

SIERRA - Excellent both from the beach and inshore.

.. SHORT CASTS: For our Southern California readers – Gary will be at the

International Sportsman's Exposition (ISE Show) at the Pomona Fairgrounds

beginning tomorrow, Jan. 10. In addition to manning a booth, he will be

presenting Magdalena Bay Fishing Opportunities at 4:30 on Sat. in the

Adventure Theater. Drop by Baja on the Fly at booth #753 to say hello or

ask a question or two.

We have not yet seen the latest issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine, but

we’ve been told there’s a great informative article with excellent photos on

us.

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY: PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER

FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

-THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA-

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., Jan. 09, 2002

.. IN GENERAL: Received a report from the trailer boaters who fished the week

after Christmas and they encountered rough conditions that prevented them

from getting all the way up to the Thetis Bank. They did catch and release

one marlin and had plenty of action inside the bay catching spotted bay bass

near Belcher's Point. Up further in the esteros, several of our clients took

advantage of the continuing corvina and snook bite. Those, together with

several palometa amarilla to 15 pounds, provided some great fishing.

After completing the International Sportsman's Exposition (ISE Show) at the

Pomona Fairgrounds this weekend, I will be heading down for a three day

exploratory trip to fish the esteros around Puerto San Carlos. Last year

Steve Dally and I fished in the same time frame and had some of the best

snook action I have ever encountered. I am going back with Don Sloan to see

if Jan. is always that good. Judging from the reports we have had, it may

be. If anyone is interested in making this adventuresome exploratory trip

with us, call Yvonne at 800 919 2252 ASAP.

AIR & SEA: Scattered clouds, warmer daytime temps and little wind made for a

pleasant week.

MARLIN - Pretty thin. I think it is time to focus on the inshore.

DORADO - Same as the marlin, but I doubt that there are many left.

TUNA - Best action is further down toward Cabo on some of the high spots.

YELLOWTAIL - Not very big, but plenty of them at the entrada and Santa Maria

Bay entrance.

CORVINA - Not exactly jumping in the boat, but don't leave a chartreuse

Clouser hanging over the side or you may lose it.

SNOOK - There are some trophy fish to be had right now.

HALIBUT - Don't waste your time. Stick with the snook and corvina.

SIERRA - Switch to wire tippets and look for the birds from Belchers to the

entrada.
