Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
January 30, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Wed, Jan. 30, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Typical weather for this time of year. It is either good for

the wind surfers or the anglers and it was just about half and half this

week. A few decent days on the beach and then the wind came back. Plenty of

dorado and a fair show of tuna. There were even a few blues caught this

week.

Yvonne and I arrived in San Mateo to begin the International Sportsman's

Exposition (ISE) Show today (1/30) through Sun. We will be in booth 1430, so

stop by and say hello if you are anywhere in the Bay Area. Gary will be

doing presentations in the Fly-Fishing Theater at the following times:

Thurs., 1:30; Fri., 4:30; also Wed., 8:00 in the Fly Tying Video Theater

demonstrating Baja Big Game Patterns. Yvonne will be moderating an

International Women's Flyfishing Panel in the Fly-Fishing Theater to be

followed by a board meeting. Be sure to check the ISE program for last

minute schedule changes. See you there.

.. OFFSHORE: A few good days.

.. INSHORE: Early mornings are the best bet with good dorado and tuna

catches.

.. BEACH: There was a rumor of a few yellowtail in front of Palmas de Cortez.

AIR & SEA: A pleasant 76 during the day, but you will need a sweatshirt or

more for

the 56 degree evenings.

BILLFISH - A few surprises with a couple of blues.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Pretty good this week.

DORADO - Shark buoys the best.

ROOSTERFISH - Not bad for the smaller fish.

JACK CREVALLE - Rancho Leonero and La Ribera beaches the best bet.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few here and there.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try floating line and a popper.

SIERRA - Still good action inshore, along the beach and don't forget to use

a

wire tippet both from the beach and inshore.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed, Jan. 30, 2002

.. IN GENERAL: Cold, windy and rain pretty much brought everything to a

standstill.

AIR & SEA: 68 - 57 with some rain.

DORADO - Not this week.

TUNA - Nobody out looking for them.

YELLOWTAIL - Slow.

CORVINA - Still plenty to play with.

SNOOK - Don't get caught napping. Just when you least expect it - wham!

HALIBUT - A few in the flats at the entrance of some of the channels.

SIERRA - Try Belcher's near the piling or on the current rips.
