Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Wed., February 13, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Continued very strong winds prevailed again this week. Tuesday was a little better after a rainy Monday afternoon. In spite of some off color water the Dorado and Sierra have been the mainstays with a few skipjack within a quarter of a mile of shore between Rancho Leonero and La Ribera.

.. OFFSHORE: Only a few boats from any of the hotels this week. Most opted for the inshore and were reporting a handful of dorado, sierra and skipjack.

.. INSHORE: A few dorado and sierra and roosterfish closer to shore.

.. BEACH: Beach continues to be pretty tough with the wind waves produced by the persistent North wind.

AIR & SEA: 70 - 55 Sea Temps 67 - 69 degrees .

BILLFISH - Still pretty quiet with the cooler water in the area.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - A few home guard out in front of Punta Pescadero.

DORADO - When the wind quits it can be pretty good.

ROOSTERFISH - Tough to get to on the beach and you have to pick through the sierra to find them inshore.

JACK CREVALLE - Early mornings produced the best action this week.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few starting to show close to shore from Rancho Leonero to Lighthouse.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure is their home and wind is no big deal for them. When you get a chance try early morning and fish the edges of the structure with olive Clouser or small poppers.

SIERRA - Still the best action at East Cape.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., February 13, 2002

.. IN GENERAL: Over a hundred whales in the bay now and very few tourist to watch them play. On the fishing front, Devils curve was disappointing earlier this week only producing a few corvina and cabrilla. Outside the Entrada, just when I had removed Dorado and Tuna from the report I get a report of both at the shark buoys out to the west. Back closer to the Entrada sierra and bottom fish are about all there is to talk about. Haven't heard of anyone going out to the Thetis lately, with the comparatively warm water it would be interesting to hear what is happening out there.

AIR & SEA: Picture perfect weather this week with little wind and temps in the mid 70's during the day. still some 68-degree water outside in the Pacific.

YELLOWTAIL - With the dark of the moon it should improve this week..

CORVINA - I am afraid that the indiscriminate netting is beginning to takes it's toll. Last month you could hardly keep them away from your fly and this month all that is left are a few smaller fish.

SNOOK - Colder water must have affected their appetite .

HALIBUT - Old standby but still a sucker for a slow retrieved Clouser on a sandy bottom.

SIERRA - Slowed down this week.
