Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
Sat., Feb. 16, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: After enduring strong winds for the entire week, it finally quit
Friday morning and was a decent beach day. Still only a few boats from the
hotels venturing out with fair results.
.. OFFSHORE: Pretty quiet, with a few marlin reported down toward Las
Frailes.
.. INSHORE: A few smaller dorado (6 to 10 pounders) skipjack and a few
yellowtail
in front of La Ribera.
.. BEACH: As expected, when the wind backs off, the fishing immediately picks
up. The beach from Rancho Leonero to Scott Glenn’s house produced a handful
of ladyfish and a few small jacks. This morning, we re-visited the area and
caught more ladyfish, jacks and even the ever-present trumpet fish.
AIR & SEA: 76 - 58 Sea Temps 67 - 69 degrees.
BILLFISH - Best action down to the south along the temperature break 7-10
miles out in front of Las Frailes. It is still a crap shoot and not
something you want to waste your time trying to catch on the fly.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - A few home guard out in front of Punta Pescadero.
DORADO - Mostly smaller fish.
ROOSTERFISH - With the ladyfish suddenly appearing, look for some of the
larger rooster to begin to show.
JACK CREVALLE - Early mornings and late afternoon for smaller fish.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few starting to show close to shore from
Rancho Leonero to the lighthouse.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure is their home and wind is no big deal
for
them. When you get a chance, try early morning and fish the edges of the
structure with an olive Clouser or small poppers.
SIERRA - Still a strong showing along the sandy beaches between la Ribera
and
Punta Colorada.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., Feb. 16, 2002
.. IN GENERAL: Whale watching is still the primary focus with more and more
arriving every day. The warm water reported up at the Thetis has dissipated
and there still a few small dorado and yellowfin tuna near the shark buoys.
We have now added a weekly catch photo for the Magdalena Bay area.
AIR & SEA: Partly cloudy with 71-60 degrees with some wind in the afternoon.
YELLOWTAIL - Still slow.
CORVINA - I am afraid that the indiscriminate netting is beginning to takes
its toll. Last month you could hardly keep them away from your fly and this
month all that is left are a few smaller fish.
SNOOK - Still colder water, which may have affected their appetites.
HALIBUT - Old standby, but still a sucker for a slow retrieved Clouser on a
sandy bottom.
SIERRA - A few under the bird school near the entrance.
