Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Sat., March 02, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Weather-wise this is the best week we have had, with little wind

to speak of. The worst of it was out of the southeast and not the dreaded

north wind. Usually, when the winds start to switch around, the northerly

winds are just about finished for the season. With better weather, most of

the fleet elected to venture down south off of Las Frailes for the warmest

water. When all the boats head off Las Frailes, it skews the catch numbers

and does not give a true picture of the overall area.

We found the inshore fishing to be reasonably good from Punta Pescadero to

Punta Arena. Eariler in the week Mike O'Neal, visiting from New York and

fishing inshore, did well on pargo and cabrilla working the reef in front of

Rancho Leonero.

I will be attending the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show in Long

Beach. I’ll be in Buenavista Beach Resort Hotel's booth on Thurs. (3/7) and

Hotel Rancho Leonero’s booth on Fri. Stop by and checkout some of our new

flies or chat.

AIR & SEA:

Mostly Cloudy

Hi 81°

Lo 65°

Wind: VA/0 mph

Humidity: 61%

Dewpoint: 58°

Visibility: 10

Sea Temps: 67 - 69 degrees.

. OFFSHORE: The boats have been taking the long ride down to Las Frailes

and it has paid off with fair-to-good catches of marlin with a few small

dorado mixed in.

. INSHORE: This is where the action is best for the flyrodder. The reef in

front of Rancho Leonero produced some fast paced action the other day for

pargo and cabrilla in the double digits. A few yellowtail still making an

appearance in front of La Ribera and in the early morning, sierra are

knocking the tar out of schooling sardinias from Rancho Buena Vista to Punta

Colorada. All of that and very little wind.

. BEACH: The jacks continue to show in good-sized schools with more and more

small roosters mixed in. Check out any of the arroyos early morning; as it

gets later in the day, try rock structure.

BILLFISH - They found a fair marlin bite mostly on bait with a few on lures

still not enough volume for the fly.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Not much action since the fleet focused more on the

billfish.

.

DORADO -The few reported were among the fleet off of Las Frailes still a

fair number of smaller fish spread out Las Palmas Bay.

ROOSTERFISH - A few smaller fish mixed in with the schools of jacks.

JACK CREVALLE - Mostly smaller fish, every once and a while the larger ones

show up slamming into a school of sardinia.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Mostly bonito.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Most of the rocky points are holding schools of small

to

medium sized fish. Now is a great time to experiment with different flies

fished slowly over the rocks. We have been experimenting with a new See

Through Olive-Backed Clouser that drives them nuts.

SIERRA - Want to see your backing? Try casting into the schools of fish

crashing on bait along the shore and you will. PS – Don’t forget the wire

bite tippet!

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., March 02, 2002

IN GENERAL: Take your pick. Out at the entrada, the yellowtail fishing has

heated up

and when you get down deep there are a few quality cabrilla. Up in the

esteros (estuaries), the action has been spotted bay bass, jacks and pompano

from Devil’s Curve to Mario’s spot.

AIR & SEA: Partly cloudy skies and 69-62 degrees with some wind in the

afternoon.

YELLOWTAIL - Good action near the entrada.

CORVINA - Try the bridge as you enter San Carlos.

SNOOK - A few smaller fish down in Almejas Bay.

HALIBUT - Try the sand beach directly across from Puerto San Carlos to the

west.

SIERRA - Birds are your friends. Follow them to the school and don’t forget

the wire bite tippet.
