Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
March 6, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: The winds, which we thought were pretty much finished, jumped up

again Sun. and Mon. Yesterday (3/5) they quit. There has been a fair

showing of marlin with a few dorado mixed in. Also the giant squid have

begun to show up offshore and, yes, they will bite a fly. Inshore has been

tough because of the wind and the beach was not fishable until yesterday.

Sierra, jacks and a few yellowtail in front of La Ribera provided the best

action inshore.

I will be attending the Fred Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show in Long

Beach. I'll be in Buenavista Beach Resort Hotel's booth on Thurs. (3/7) and

Hotel Rancho Leonero's booth on Fri. Stop by and checkout some of our new

flies or chat.

AIR & SEA:

Sunny

Hi 83°

Lo 61°

Wind: N /6 mph

Humidity: 60%

Dewpoint: 54°

Visibility: 15

Sea Temps: 67.5 - 73 degrees.

. OFFSHORE: From Punta Arena to Las Frailes 10 to 20 miles off is providing

the best action for marlin, dorado and giant squid.

. INSHORE: Good action for sierra, jacks, pargo, cabrilla and a few quality

yellowtail down deep at La Ribera

. BEACH: Find the sardina and you will probably find the sierra early

morning and jacks until mid-morning. Rock structure still providing good

action for pargo and cabrilla.

BILLFISH - They found a fair marlin bite mostly on bait with a few on lures

still not enough volume for the fly.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Lots of footballs outside of Punta Arena.

.

DORADO -The few reported were among the fleet off of Las Frailes. There are

still a

fair number of smaller fish spread out Las Palmas Bay.

ROOSTERFISH - A few smaller fish mixed in with the schools of jacks.

JACK CREVALLE - Mostly smaller fish, every once in a while the larger ones

show up slamming into a school of sardinia trapped against the shore.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Mostly bonito.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Most of the rocky points are holding schools of small

to medium sized fish

SIERRA - Don't forget the wire bite tippet! Watch for the bait schools close

to shore.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., March 06, 2002

IN GENERAL: The entrada continues to provide a few medium-sized yellowtail.

Up in the esteros, the corvina, spotted bay bass and pompano have been the

best bet.

AIR & SEA: Sunny skies and 70-59 degrees with some wind in the

afternoon.

YELLOWTAIL - Good action near the entrada.

CORVINA - Up towards Devil’s Curve .

SNOOK - A few smaller fish down in Almejas Bay.

HALIBUT - Try the sand beach directly across from Puerto San Carlos to the

west with an olive or chartreuse Clouser.

SIERRA - Slowed down this week.
