Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
March 9, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Sat., March 09, 2002

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: The Golden One, dorado – the fly-rodders’ favorite species –

showed up in spades this week! Mid-week, the smaller dorado (8-10 pounds)

came in double digits offshore from Rancho Leonero to outside of Cabo Pulmo.

Then, the next, day some larger fish (20-30 pounds) bit with a vengeance,

sucking a See Through Deceiver like it was the last morsel on the table. On

the marlin front, the count continued to climb with most of the fish

released being of the smaller variety, somewhat under 100-pounds. March is

shaping up to be a barn burner.

AIR & SEA:

Cloudy

Hi 85°

Low 61

Wind: NW/11 mph

Humidity: 56%

Dew point: 52°

Visibility: 12

Sea Temps: 68 - 72 degrees.

. OFFSHORE: Dorado were the stars for the week for our fly rod clients.

. INSHORE: Still a few yellows in front of La Ribera and the sierra still

chasing bait schools close to shore.

. BEACH: Getting better by the day. Look for the sardinia and the pelicans

and you will be in the middle of some fast paced action.

BILLFISH - Getting better every week, but not the volume needed for the

flyrodder.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Waiting for the temperatures to bump up a couple clicks.

.

DORADO -More seem to be arriving every day and eager to take your fly.

ROOSTERFISH - The big guys not here, but we’re seeing a few smaller fish.

JACK CREVALLE - Small schools moving fast along the shore looking for

sardinia.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Mostly bonito.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Take some time to explore the rocky points or reefs

along shore. Try using a floating line and a Holographic Popper and you may

get a trophy pargo.

SIERRA - Just keeps going. Don't forget the wire bite tippet! Watch for the

bait schools close to shore.

barracuda

and a few cabrilla. Offshore, the shark fisherman are still seeing dorado

and some football tuna.

AIR & SEA: Overcast skies and 70-59 degrees with some wind in the afternoon.

YELLOWTAIL - The best action out toward the entrada.

CORVINA - Only a few up toward Devil's Curve .

SNOOK - Some larger fish up toward Devil’s Curve, but not biting very well.

HALIBUT - Our old standby near the sandy beaches.

SIERRA - Not much action this week.
