Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

Wed., March 13, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Dorado are still creating a stir for this early in March. Marlin

catches improve every week, though most of the action is between Punta Arena

and Las Frailes, 10 to 20 miles offshore. Inshore, small roosterfish and

sierra provided some backing-revealing action.

I spent several days at the Fred Hall Show in Long Beach with both Rancho

Leonero and Buenavista Beach Resort. What a turnout! And it was fun to

visit with all of our Southern California friends. My grandson, Elliott

Watson/Young, celebrated his 11th birthday by catching his first fish, (a 12

inch rainbow trout) at the show and judging by his reaction, I may have a

constant companion on the beach. Be sure to visit

Of course, this means that my other four grandsons are hopping from one foot

to the other and are planning a trip to next week’s Fred Hall show in San

Diego to try to match his feat.

AIR & SEA:

Cloudy

Hi 89°

Lo 65°

Wind: NW/6 mph

Humidity: 52%

Dewpoint: 49°

Visibility: 15

Sea Temps: 68 - 72 degrees.

. OFFSHORE: Dorado and marlin provide the best action with the dorado being

the favorite of the flyrodder.

. INSHORE: Sierra, jacks and roosters at Punta Colorada were the best bet.

. BEACH: Early mornings have been the time to be on the beach. Jacks,

roosters and sierra looking for schools of baitfish from Palmas to Punta

Colorada.

BILLFISH - Good for the gear guys, but still not enough volume for the

flyrodder.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Waiting for the temperatures to bump up a couple clicks.

DORADO - If they keep coming, this could be a memorable March.

ROOSTERFISH - The big guys are not here, but we're seeing plenty of the

smaller

fish.

JACK CREVALLE - Small schools moving fast along the shore looking for

sardinia, particularly in front of Punta Colorada.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Mostly bonito.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Take some time to explore the rocky points or reefs

along shore. Try using a floating line and a holographic popper and you may

get a trophy pargo.

SIERRA - Just keeps going. Don't forget the wire bite tippet! Watch for the

bait schools close to shore.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., March 13, 2002

IN GENERAL: Punta Belcher and the entrada produced fair fishing for those

willing to use shooting heads and get down to the bottom. A few yellowtail

at the entrada and good halibut catches at Punta Belcher.

AIR & SEA: Overcast skies and 72-60 degrees with some wind in the afternoon.

YELLOWTAIL - You will need at least a 300 grain shooting head to get down

where they are hanging at the entrada.

CORVINA - Plenty of smaller ones.

SNOOK - Still reports of seeing some larger fish up toward Devil's Curve,

but not biting very well.

HALIBUT - Punta Belcher yielded catches of halibut to seven pounds.

SIERRA - Seem to have disappeared for the moment.
