Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Sat., April 06, 2002

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Cecilia “Pudge” Kleinkauf's Women’s Flyfishing® group finished

up with an exciting morning on the kayaks with lots of sierra , pargo and

other species. They experienced plenty of break-offs, but fun fishing. They

have already set the dates for next year and have had several sign up. I

even got convinced to try the new personal pontoon boat at Rancho Leonero

this morning. What a hoot! Even the sierra drag you around. You can bet I

will be back out again tomorrow after I set my clocks forward.

AIR & SEA:

Sunny

Hi 92°

Lo 68°

Wind: VA/0 mph

Humidity: 69%

Dewpoint: 61°

Visibility: 10

Sea Temps: 71 - 76 degrees

. OFFSHORE: Warmer water is still down toward Las Frailes and is slowly

working its way up the coast. As it comes, it seems to be bringing more and

more dorado and billfish.

. INSHORE: If you hit it right, you can do roosters, jacks and sierra first

thing in the morning and then run out a few miles for the dorado.

. BEACH: It is a real mixed bag right now if you don't get five or six

species in a morning you are not trying.

BILLFISH - More blue flags this week and fortunately most of them are

accompanied by a release flag.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still waiting for Charley.

DORADO - Find something floating and you may get lucky. Heard of one boat

that found a school hanging out under a dead pelican.

ROOSTERFISH - One client got dusted three times by reported 40-pound fish.

JACK CREVALLE - Huge schools cruising near shore.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Go a few miles off of Punta Arena and you’ll

find all you want.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - We have broke off so many large fish lately that you

would think the fish are collecting Clousers for jewelry.

SIERRA - Plenty around. Use clear or opaque wire bite tippet, not the black

variety.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., April 06, 2002

IN GENERAL: Weather is still less than perfect with cold temperatures and

wind most afternoon. In spite of this, the fishing is slowly beginning to

improve both at the entrada and in the esteros.

AIR & SEA: Windy conditions and cooler temps this period.

YELLOWTAIL - Fair fishing down deep at the entrada. Try to be back by early

afternoon to avoid a bumpy ride home.

CORVINA - Smaller fish prevail in the usual spots.

SNOOK – Devil’s Curve is the best producer with several fish over 10 pounds

on chartreuse Clousers.

HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser a good bet.

SIERRA - A few on the current break outside of Belcher’s point.
