Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
April 10, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Wed., April 10, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Early mornings just south of La Ribera has been wide open for

roosters, jacks and ladyfish from gray light around 6:30 until about 8.

Sierra have been biting anything that hits the water for a half-hour just

before sunup. Our clients fishing from the pangas have had good success with

small to 20-pound roosters with an occasional jack thrown in for good

measure. The dorado bite slowed down except for a lucky few who found the

right school. On the billfish front, the fish are continuing their

springtime migration into the area and are still some distance below us. I

look for them to be a lot closer in the next few weeks.

AIR & SEA: Lots of clouds and a significant temperature drop in the last few

days. Strong winds from midday until evenings.

Sunny

Hi 90°

Lo 64°

Wind: VA17 mph

Humidity: 69%

Dewpoint: 61°

Visibility: 10

Sea Temps: 71 - 76 degrees

. OFFSHORE: The best action still is down and outside of Las Frailes. It is

at least a two-hour run to get there.

. INSHORE: It seems more like May than April. Last year everything seemed to

be a month late. This year it seems like it is a month early.

. BEACH: La Ribera can't be much better.

BILLFISH - Several boats came back with multiples and one had six flags

flying.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still among the missing.

DORADO - Still hit or miss.

ROOSTERFISH - Some quality fish both inshore and from the beach.

JACK CREVALLE - Plenty slamming the sardinia at La Ribera and some single

big

boys cruising the seam.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Go a few miles off of Punta Arena and you'll

find all you want.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - If you land one over 10 pounds you are pretty good!

SIERRA - Still plenty around. Use clear or opaque wire bite tippet, not the

Black variety.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., April 10, 2002

IN GENERAL: Weather has improved this week and the fishing continues to

improve as well.

AIR & SEA: No wind and warmer temps this week.

YELLOWTAIL - A few at the entrada.

CORVINA - Both the pier and bridge coming into town yielded fair catches.

SNOOK – Devil’s Curve is the best bet for these guys right now.

HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser are a good bet.

SIERRA - Watch for the birds out in the bay toward the entrada.
