Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham
April 14, 2002
Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Sat., April 13, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Inshore fishing – whether from panga, pontoon or the beach –

early morning is still the crowd-pleaser. A fly-fishing physician from

Spokane, Wash., was back again this year and had another great day on the

pontoon boat with double digit roosters as well as sierra, jacks and a few

pargo. Baja on the Fly guide Lance Peterson, on his last day before

returning to the States, was out on the beach before gray light for one

final fling and was not disappointed. The action was fast and furious and

he still was back in time to catch his shuttle at 11 a.m. He said it was one

of his best days ever

on the beach with some real variety including, roosters, jacks, ladyfish and

even sierra.

AIR & SEA: Still a little cooler than normal for this time of year.

Sunny

Hi 90°

Lo 64°

Wind: VA08 mph

Humidity: 69%

Dewpoint: 61°

Visibility: 10

Sea Temps: 71 - 76 degrees

. OFFSHORE: As promised, the action moved a little closer to home with good

billfish and dorado action 10- to 15-miles out from the lighthouse at Punta

Arena.

. INSHORE: In front of both Buenavista Beach Resort and Rancho Leonero, the

action has been good early morning even the kayakers are whacking them.

. BEACH: La Ribera can't be much better in the early morning and late

afternoon.

BILLFISH - Continuing to improve and move closer every day.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - I think Charley is still partying at Cabo.

DORADO - Good but scattered.

ROOSTERFISH - Some quality fish both inshore and from the beach.

JACK CREVALLE - A few more large fish found this week.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Go a few miles off of Punta Arena and you'll

find all you want.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Good bite in front of Rancho Buena Vista in the

afternoon on the rock reef.

SIERRA - Everywhere. Use clear or opaque wire bite tippet, not the black

variety.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., April 13, 2002

IN GENERAL: The most action this week was the opening of scallop season.

With

over 400 permits issued, I don't think the tasty morsels have a chance.

AIR & SEA: Warmer morning and windy afternoons.

YELLOWTAIL - A few at the entrada.

CORVINA - The bridge at the entrance to town is pretty good early mornings.

SNOOK – Devil’s Curve is the best bet for these guys right now.

HALIBUT - Sandy beaches with a chartreuse Clouser are a good bet.

SIERRA - Watch for the birds out in the bay toward the entrada.
