Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Wed., May 01, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: From last Sun. to yesterday there was more north wind and

resulting wind waves along the beach. Today, however, there is little wind

and lots of boats out looking. Yesterday, north wind or not, the roosters

bit well in front of Rancho Leonero and at the lighthouse. There was also a

fair bite of ladyfish, AKA the poor man’s tarpon.

AIR & SEA: Cool mornings and warm days with some high clouds.

Mostly Cloudy

Hi 97°

Lo 73°

Wind: NW/11 mph

Humidity: 51%

Dewpoint: 61°

Visibility: 15

Water Temps 75-79

. OFFSHORE: Continues at a good pace with more shots than takes.

. INSHORE: Roosters, sierra, and ladyfish as well as a few quality pargo on

the reefs.

. BEACH: Rooster alley produced some fair fishing for small jacks and an

occasional rooster.

BILLFISH Take your pick: sleepers, tailers, jumpers and better yet, fish in

the trolling pattern fairly often.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - This is the longest I can remember going without even a

few.

DORADO - A few here and there from Punta Pescadero to Las Frailes.

ROOSTERFISH - The larger fish were still out at the lighthouse yesterday.

JACK CREVALLE - Mostly smaller fish, but swimming right in the seam. Better

to fish up and down the beach instead of casting straight out.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Still good action inshore.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Every reef from Las Fralies to Muertos Bay holding a

few.

SIERRA - Showed so-so in front of Rancho Leonero this morning. Use clear or

opaque wire bite tippet, not the black variety.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., May 01, 2002

IN GENERAL: Plenty of wind this week kept everyone close to home. From the

plane flying down yesterday I could see it was solid whitecaps from Ensenada

to below Magdalena Bay.

AIR & SEA: Clear skies with windy conditions in the afternoon.

Air Temperature 62 - 76

Water Temperature 60 – 68.

YELLOWTAIL - Pretty sparse this week.

CORVINA - Once in a while a better quality fish shows up.

SNOOK - Look for some of the deeper holes in the smaller esteros.

HALIBUT - Find a sand beach and give it a go.

SIERRA - Watch for the birds and the current rips. Here's a tip: the current

rips are usually easy to spot if you watch for the foam along the edges.
