EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:
PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Sat., May 11, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Back to back reports of good weather, hallelujah we are on a roll. The Spring season is shifting into high gear and finally the tuna have begun to arrive for the party. For those of you that emailed me regarding the “Trusty Bonefish Pattern” Brian O’Keefe used to catch his Grande rooster last week, here is the description in his own words. “The fly is a Bahama Bunny. Size 4. Tan in color...maybe a bit toward buff or ginger. Then were a couple tan rubber legs and a bright orange thread head. With bead chain eyes..” .I went through all my flies and didn’t find one that looked like that. I guess it is back t the vise.
AIR & SEA: Mornings are still cool and a windbreaker fro the first hour is a welcome addition. Then it warms up enough that the light Easterly breezes in the afternoon are welcome.
Hazy
Hi 86°
Lo 67°
Wind: E/5 mph
Humidity: 39%
Visibility: 15
Water Temps 75-79
. OFFSHORE: Plenty of boats sporting multiple billfish flags, enormous dorado on the prowl and now the tuna have arrived.
. INSHORE: The Father and Son team of Sid and Whit Wales had a killer first day Friday catching plenty of roosters, pompano and enough skipjack to make their arms ache. Whit hooked the fish of the day a hulking thirty pound rooster in front of Punta Colorada that headed straight for the rocks that cut his sixteen pound tippet like it was butter. I’ll bet I know where Whit will be first thing this morning.
. BEACH: Plenty of sight casting opportunities for jacks and roosters. Patience pays off, just ask Pat Riley who was taking a few days R&R after a Scott Rod sales meeting and caught some nice jacks weighing in the mid-teens.
BILLFISH – Lots of fish being seen, the trick is to find the hungry one.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Finally arrived with the porpoise, I expect we will begin to find them on some of the high spots along the coast soon.
DORADO – Mostly larger fish traveling in small groups.
ROOSTERFISH - La Ribera for the smaller guys and better quality from Punta Colrada to the Lighthouse
JACK CREVALLE – Seeing more and more cruising the seam. I counted fifteen from La Capillia to Rooster Alley yesterday (Friday)
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Between Rancho Leonero and Buenavista Beach
Hotel a couple of miles off the beach there are all you want.
PARGO AND CABRILLA – Most of the rocky points holding a few.
SIERRA - A few, but it has definitely tapered off.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., May 11, 2002
IN GENERAL: Most of the action took place up in the Devils Curve area this week and there has been little activity out at the Entrada or on the outside offshore. With the water temps creeping higher it won’t be long before the skipjack, tuna and dorado begin to make their annual appearance.
AIR & SEA: High clouds and some wind in the afternoons
Air Temperature 62 - 75
Water Temperature 60 - 68.
YELLOWTAIL – No boats targeted them this week that we know of. .
CORVINA – Still a pretty good bite throughout the bay in the usual spots. The bridge, Devils Curve, and near the Power Plant.
SNOOK - Devil's Curve is the best bet right now.
HALIBUT – No record breakers in size but good volume at the sand beaches near Magdalena City.
SIERRA – Not much action try the current breaks near Punt Belcher.
