Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:
PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Wed., May 15, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Tim Jewel, of Brisbane, Calif., sneaking down for a little R & R
after a business conference, has had a exciting trip. Using a panga as his
platform, directing his attention inshore produced several days of
spectacular fly-fishing. Roosters, pompano, ladyfish and some killer jacks
snapped up his See Through Deceivers and La Rubias like chips and guacamole
at a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. Twenty-five pound and larger jacks were winning
the war at last count, but he was headed back out this morning to try to
even the score.
This is the least crowded I have seen East Cape in many a year and, of
course, the fishing continues to improve. Cheap airfares and space at the
Inn make the East Cape a good choice for a quickie trip to sharpen those
saltwater fly-fishing skills.
AIR & SEA: Mid 80's during the day with overnight temps falling to a
comfortable low 60's.
Hazy
Hi 86°
Lo 62°
Wind: E/5 mph
Humidity: 39%
Visibility: 15
Water Temps 75-79
. OFFSHORE: For those that put in their time, the results can be impressive
with about half the boats sporting multiple billfish flags. While the dorado
are large, the big schools charging the boat have not begun to happen yet.
. INSHORE: Sid Wales, of Menlo, Calif. and his father Whit, San Francisco,
finished up with Sid finally catching up and matching his father’s
roosterfish catch. Tim Jewell heading out for his third day of inshore
commented this morning that he had averaged 20 good fish a day
. BEACH: If you pick the right spots the fishing is pretty good. La Ribera
is going off early morning and late afternoon with jacks, roosters and
ladyfish being the predominant catch. It is interesting how many
fly-fishers I see just blind casting when there is nothing showing and not
even any bait, instead of walking until they find an active area like La
Ribera.
BILLFISH - Good volume and even a few hungry ones.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Rumor is some were found outside of Cabo Pulmo.
DORADO - Mostly larger fish traveling in small groups.
ROOSTERFISH - La Ribera for the smaller guys and better quality from Punta
Colorada to the lighthouse.
JACK CREVALLE - Best action around the bait receiver at Punta Colorada.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Just a few miles off shore throughout Palmas
Bay.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Punta Ignaticio and Rancho Leonero still the best bet.
SIERRA - A few, but it has definitely tapered off.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Wed., May 15, 2002
IN GENERAL: Mario's Spot and Devil’s Curve produced the best action this
week. Snook, grouper and spotted bay bass were the most aggressive.
AIR & SEA: High clouds and some wind in the afternoons
Air Temperature 62 - 75
Water Temperature 60 - 68.
YELLOWTAIL - Still pretty quiet.
CORVINA - The old standby, the bridge at the entrance to Puerto San Carlo,
producing a few in addition to a few grouper and pargo.
SNOOK - Devil's Curve or Mario's Spot are the best bet right now.
HALIBUT - No record breakers in size, but good volume at the sand beaches
near Magdalena City.
SIERRA - Slow this week.
