EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:
PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Sat., June 01, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: While this week brought some extreme tides accompanied by some
large surf, it did not hamper the offshore and inshore fishing. The beach
suffered some and the bite just flat slowed down. Fri. (5/31) things began
to swing back around and Don Sloan, Borrego Springs, Calif., who fishes with
us every June, found good action on the beach from Punta Colorada to Punta
Arena. Plenty of ladyfish and a few roosters and jacks tore up his green
Baja Deep Diver in short order. Don and I spent several hours last night
reloading both of our fly boxes. This morning we had folks on both pangas
and ATVs and we’re hoping for some great stories this afternoon over the
first Margarita of a new month.
AIR & SEA - Calm seas with just enough breezes in the afternoon to keep
things cool.
High clouds and haze
Hi 91°
Lo 69°
Wind: 5-mph easterly in afternoon
Humidity: 78%
Visibility: 15
Water Temps 79-81
. OFFSHORE: Judging from the flags on the boats going by the house in the
afternoon, fishing continues at a good pace. It’s not wide open, but enough
to keep every one from falling asleep in the sun.
. INSHORE: Still plenty of skipjack and – closer to the beach – sierra,
jacks, roosterfish up to 15 pounds taking deceivers in olive and white or
the same colors in Clouser configuration.
. BEACH: Extreme tides this week combined with high surf made the beach
difficult. Most of the sardina is being found above Punta Pescadero or down
around the Cabo Pulmo. Lots of mullet all along the shore, so larger flies
are in order, both the jacks and roosters can be seen chasing schools of
mullet along Bartle beach.
BILLFISH - Lots of fish outside of La Ribera all the way down to outside of
Las Frailes. Still not as aggressive as we would like, but it is getting
better every week.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Some football-size fish mixed in with the large schools of
skipjack found a few miles off shore.
DORADO - Find the right floating object and you are in business.
ROOSTERFISH - Sure wouldn't call it wide open, but there is enough going on
to
keep it interesting.
JACK CREVALLE – Didn’t see many of the bigger fish this week ,but this is
the
month we usually find them.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Outside La Ribera a few miles there are
acres of them.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Caught a few on the reef in front of Rancho Leonero.
SIERRA -La Ribera produced a few this week, mixed in with jacks and roosters

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., June 01, 2002
IN GENERAL: With cold and windy conditions it has been a tough go. Up in the
esteros the water is cold and little action. Out near the entrada there are
red crabs everywhere and while the yellowtail have been among the missing,
the halibut fishing was pretty good. Further outside the entrada we are
starting to hear sketchy reports of dorado and billfish. Also, a few tuna
are starting to show as well. I don’t think I would run right out there,
however, it sounds encouraging for the summer and fall season.
AIR & SEA: High clouds and some cool winds in the afternoons
Air Temperature 65 - 75
Water Temperature 60 - 66.
YELLOWTAIL - Either the entrada or the entrance to Santa Maria Bay are the
best bets right now.
CORVINA - Try the pier or the bridge at the entrance to town.
SNOOK - Slow, slow slow.
HALIBUT - Sandy beaches as usual out near Punta Belcher.
SIERRA - A few outside of Belchers on the current rips.
