PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Wed., June 05, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Inshore and the beach have begun to deliver the kind of action that we have come to expect in June. Punta Arena has several cuts, with some great deep cuts that are producing non-stop ladyfish action and every once in a while the jacks and roosters slam the beach chasing mullet and sardinas. If you are in the right place at the right time, it’s some fun fishing. On the pangas some of the largest roosters we have seen recently have been coming up on the slow trolled mullet. Lots of shots on some quality fish. We even had a few dorado come after the mullet less than two hundred yards from the beach.
AIR & SEA - Calm seas with just enough of an easterly breeze in the afternoon to keep
things cool.
High clouds and haze
Hi 91°
Lo 72°
Wind: 5-mph easterly in afternoon
Humidity: 78%
Visibility: 15
Water Temps 79-81
. OFFSHORE: Offshore must have slowed down this week. We can always tell by the number of cruisers that we see fishing the inshore bite.
. INSHORE: See-Thru Deceivers and sea habits in olive and white clousers are all producing.
Take your pick: roosters, jacks, a few dorado close to the beach and a few miles out plenty of skipjack and a few tuna to fill in the gaps
BEACH: Stick with the larger patterns in olive, white and flash. With the fish feeding on the mullet the larger patterns are the key. Keep them sparse so you can throw with your 8wt.or 10wt.
BILLFISH – Still OK with more blues and sailfish beginning to show up along with the stripeys.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Some football-size fish mixed in with the large schools of
skipjack found a few miles off-shore.
DORADO – Pleasant surprise to find them so close to the shore.
ROOSTERFISH – Plenty of the larger, quality fish to take shots at
JACK CREVALLE – It is June and the big guys just arrived for the party. Punta Arena produced some awesome action this week.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Outside La Ribera a few miles there are
acres of them.
PARGO AND CABRILLA – Wide open bite for a few nights in the cove next to Rancho Leonero at sundown .
SIERRA –Still a few at Punta Colorada

IN GENERAL: The last three days continued to be overcast, windy and cold. From the Entrada all the way up into the bay there are loads of langostina (Red Crab). The tuna are 20 miles south of the Entrada and ten miles further in the same direction there a few dorado to be found.
AIR & SEA: High clouds and some cool winds in the afternoons
Air Temperature 65 - 75

YELLOWTAIL – Should be at the entrada but so far not much action
CORVINA - Try the pier or the bridge at the entrance to town.
SNOOK - Slow, slow slow.
HALIBUT - Sandy beaches as usual out near Punta Belcher.
SIERRA - A few outside of Belchers on the current rips.
