Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Sat., June 08, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Ed Rice, Camas, Wash., former CEO and owner of International Sportsmen’s Expositions fishing, hunting and travel shows, visited us this week with the goal of adding more saltwater species to his impressive lifetime list of 98 fish he had caught on the fly. He was sure that there would be a few he could add at East Cape. He caught his first roosterfish on the first day and then went on to add pargo and halibut to his list. On his last day he caught a 17-pound rooster from the beach as well. The dorado fishing picked up dramatically when a floating dead whale was discovered with a large number of dorado hiding underneath.

From the beach we had one of the best weeks for large jacks and roosters that I can remember. Twenty-pound jacks were common. Two of our guides, Don Sloan and Lance Peterson had fish in that size-class. On the roosterfish front, some catches up into the 40-pound class were recorded at Punta Arena. The only negative for the week was the scarcity of bait, both big and small.

AIR & SEA - Calm seas with just enough of an easterly breeze in the afternoon to keep things cool.

High clouds and haze

Hi 91°

Lo 72°

Wind: 5-mph easterly in afternoon

Humidity: 78%

Visibility: 15

Water Temps 79-84

. OFFSHORE: Dorado drew most of the attention with billfish taking a back seat. The number of striped marlin dropped a bit and the blue marlin count doubled.

. INSHORE: Plenty of skipjack with a few yellowfin mixed in were still just a few miles off the beach. Closer to the beach the BIG roosters continued to pound the large schools of mullet. A few dorado were also found very close to shore.

BEACH: Stick with the larger patterns in olive, white and flash. With the fish feeding on the mullet the larger patterns are the key. Keep them sparse so you can throw with your 10 weight..

BILLFISH – Blues took the center stage with fewer striped marlin.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Some football-size fish mixed in with the large schools of

skipjack found a few miles off-shore.

DORADO – If you were the first to find the dead whale you were bound to do well.

ROOSTERFISH – Plenty of the larger, quality fish to take shots at, particularly at Punta Arena

JACK CREVALLE – It is June and the big guys just arrived for the party. Punta Arena produced some awesome action this week.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Outside La Ribera a few miles there are

acres of them.

PARGO AND CABRILLA – Wide open bite for a few nights in the cove next to Rancho Leonero at sundown.

SIERRA –Still a few at Punta Colorado

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., June 08, 2002

IN GENERAL: Conditions continue to be less than ideal and everyone is basically waiting for the season to get underway both inshore and offshore. Most of the warmer water to the south below Punta Tosca and there have been a few dorado reported around the shark buoys in that area

AIR & SEA: Still unseasonably cool and less than ideal conditions

Air Temperature 65 - 75

Water Temperature 60 - 66.

YELLOWTAIL – Slow going

CORVINA – Even the stock spots are producing slow action.

SNOOK - Slow, slow, slow.

HALIBUT - Sandy beaches as usual out near Punta Belcher.

SIERRA – A few under the bird schools from Punta Belcher to the Entrada.
