Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Capt. Gary Graham

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -

Sat., June 29, 2002

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Fair to good fishing continued this week with plenty of inshore

action to keep our clients happy. Ron Liljedahl and his family, taking

advantage of some incredibly inexpensive airfares, traveled all the way from

Hendersonville, NC to sample our fly-fishing as well as diving. While Ron

and his son Josh caught everything from large roosters to amberjack on the

fly, wife Lori and daughter Katy were exploring the backcountry of East Cape

for cave paintings. They all had a Baja Adventure they won't soon forget.

The next couple of months are shaping up to be some finest fishing we have

seen during the summer in some time. All the hotels are offering fantastic

low-cost specials, and airfares are the cheapest we have seen in years. If

you have a few free days and want a quick fly-fishing getaway, now is the

time. Give our office a call at 800 919 2252 for the details.

.

AIR & SEA - Hazy conditions all week and very damp in the mornings. Little

wind in the morning but some easterly wind midday.

Hi 94°

Lo 75°

Wind: Light

Humidity: 74%

Dewpoint: 61°

Visibility: 12

Water Temps 79-84

. OFFSHORE: The best offshore action was east of Punta Pescadero for

billfish, some dorado and even a fair number of football-sized tuna under

the porpoise.

. INSHORE: Large roosters, dorado and amberjack dominated the catches this

week and you didn't have to go far. The sticks in front of Scott Glenn’s

house provided the best action. Down at Punta Colorada, the small roosters

were practically eating any deceiver pattern in their sight. Around the

corner at Las Barracas there was a pretty good wahoo show early.

BEACH: A fair number of smaller roosters to 10 pounds next to the pier at

Rancho Leonero. There’s still few sardinas along the beach, but plenty of

mullet to attract the larger roosters. Pompano are also showing in large

schools and are a sucker for a small fly. We even caught a rainbow runner

that was swimming with the pompano the other day.

BILLFISH - Striped marlin holding and the blues increasing along with the

sailfish.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Best under the porpoise and few mixed in with the large

schools of skipjack.

DORADO - Shark buoys up at Punta Pescadero a good bet.

ROOSTERFISH - Water has begun to warm back up and we are seeing more fish

Every day; more smaller fish, though.

JACK CREVALLE - Some large schools cruising near Punta Arena.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty of the smaller guys, but the quality

ones we were seeing several weeks ago are among the missing.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - All the rock reefs holding a few smaller ones.

SIERRA - Still a few around. Rancho Leonero’s pier has produced a few this

week and I keep hearing about guys being "bit off," which sounds like

sierra. Try using a fly tied on a long shank hook to keep from getting bit

off.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., June 29, 2002

IN GENERAL: While late, summer conditions are finally beginning to happen –

at least up in the esteros. A few snook to 15 pounds were caught and

released this week on our greenie deceiver. Also a few leopard grouper,

jacks, and corvina were caught using chartreuse and white Clousers. One boat

traveled 25 miles on a heading of 210 degrees and was rewarded with a

handful of tuna to 50 pounds even though the sea temps were around 65

degrees.

AIR & SEA: Clear sunny skies with little wind

Air Temperature 60 - 72

Water Temperature 60 - 65

YELLOWTAIL - With better weather, expect more activity on the part of the

anglers and for some yellowtail to be found either at the entrada or at

Santa Maria Bay.

CORVINA - Back on track.

SNOOK - Best show in several months.

HALIBUT - Most of the sandy beaches have a few.

SIERRA - Not much going on.
