Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:
PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Wednesday, July 03, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Great weather and good fishing prevailed for the week. Offshore, the boats that traveled out far enough to get out of the off color water did well on dorado and billfish. Back inshore the roosterfish, amberjack and jacks kept things interesting. Sardinia has been tough to get so mullet have been the bait of choice for teasing the roosters up close enough for a shot. Water seems to be warming up along the beach and the pompano fishing has been extraordinary this week.
The next couple of months are shaping up to be some finest fishing we have
seen during the summer in some time. All the hotels are offering fantastic
low-cost specials, and airfares are the cheapest we have seen in years. If
you have a few free days and want a quick fly-fishing getaway, now is the
time. Give our office a call at 800 919 2252 for the details.
.
AIR & SEA - Hazy conditions with little
wind in the morning but some easterly wind midday.
Hi 94°
Lo 75°
Wind: Light
Humidity: 74%
Dewpoint: 61°
Visibility: 12
Water Temps 79-84
. OFFSHORE: Clean water is out some thirty miles but once you get there the fishing is great.
. INSHORE: Cooler water temperatures slowed things down a click this week. Large roosters, dorado and amberjack provided the best action. There are still some schools of skipjack to be found a few miles offshore, however the fish have been smaller lately. .
BEACH: The best consistent action has been from La Ribera to Los Barriles. Below La Ribera the water has cooled noticeably and roosterfish action moved back up closer to the hotels. Feeding jacks, roosterfish and pompano were found from Rancho Leonero to the beach in front of my house at La Capilla
BILLFISH – Once you get outside the dirty water the fishing has been good
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Best under the porpoise and few mixed in with the large
schools of skipjack.
DORADO – Lots of free swimmers and a few under the shark buoys at Punta Pescadero.
ROOSTERFISH – More fish in the 10-20 range this week and few larger guys in front of the sticks next to Rooster Alley.
JACK CREVALLE – Saw a number of single fish whacking the tar out of small schools of mullet in front of the house..
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Plenty of the smaller guys, but the quality
ones we were seeing several weeks ago are among the missing.
PARGO AND CABRILLA – Found a few swimming close to shore near Bartle Beach.
SIERRA - Still a few around. Rancho Leonero’s pier has produced a few this
week and I keep hearing about guys being "bit off," which sounds like
sierra. Try using a fly tied on a long shank hook to keep from getting bit
off.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Wednesday, July 03, 2002
IN GENERAL: The water offshore is beginning to slowly warm up and with it should be the beginning of the arrival of some of the exotics. With the good reports on tuna last week, I expect to hear of more fishing activity in the next few weeks. Up in the Esteros the water appears to be warming as well particularly in the Southern portion of the bay. Alemejas Bay is definitely the best bet this week.
AIR & SEA: Clear sunny skies with little wind
Air Temperature 60 - 72
Water Temperature 60 - 72
YELLOWTAIL – Still not hearing of much activity
CORVINA – Devils curve, the bridge, and pier all produced reasonable catches this week.
SNOOK - Best show in several months.
HALIBUT - Most of the sandy beaches have a few.
SIERRA - Quiet.
