Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS
REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:
PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA
- THE ONLY ORVIS EXPEDITION COMPANY IN BAJA -
Wednesday, July 10, 2002
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The flume of off-color and cooler water continues to diminish in
size and move further off shore. If the trend continues, we should be rid of
it by next week. In the meantime, the roosterfish action is still is giving
fly-rodders the best bang for the buck. Quality fish continue cruising close
to shore and there are plenty of mullet to tease them close enough for a
shot. The dorado are mostly the larger variety and can be found cruising
close to the surface. You can often get close enough to sight cast to them.
The tuna bite has begun, but it’s not as consistent as we would like.

AIR & SEA - Some high clouds and light breezes in the p.m.
Hi 88°
Lo 77°
Wind: S /6 mph
Humidity: 70%
Dewpoint: 70°
Visibility: 12
Water Temps 74 - 84
. OFFSHORE: Outside the cooler water the action is good for billfish with
stripers leading the way. Some quality dorado and a good tuna bite if you
are in the right place at the right time.
. INSHORE: When this year is over this will be the benchmark for
roosterfish. As I have said before, more roosterfish have been taken on the
fly than I can ever remember in the past. Not just the smaller variety, but
also some quality fish to 40 pounds. If roosterfish are your passion, this
is your year at East Cape.
BEACH: Plenty of shots and the cooler water has moved a few miles offshore
causing more fish to come close to the shore.
BILLFISH - Plenty of action for the gear guys and a few shots for the
dedicated fly angler.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Still mostly the football variety.
DORADO - Lots of free swimmers and a few under the shark buoys at Punta
Pescadero.
ROOSTERFISH - What has been a banner year just keeps on going.
JACK CREVALLE - A few large schools close to the lighthouse at Punta Arena.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few, but not the larger ones we had last
month.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock reefs are your best bet right now..
SIERRA - From the pier to the reef in front of Rancho Leonero is the best
bet.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Looks like the offshore temperatures are beginning to warm up
and it should not be long before the dorado show up. Inside the bay,
conditions have continued to improve and the snook have begun to show in
fair numbers in most of the stock spots, Devil's Curve, Los Barriles Estero,
Mario's Spot, etc.
AIR & SEA: Some high clouds with light winds
Air Temperature 66 - 76
Water Temperature 60 - 74
YELLOWTAIL - Usually the guys fishing the bottom at the entrada come up with
a few fish, but so far this year it has been slim.
CORVINA – Devil’s Curve, the bridge, and the pier all produced reasonable
catches this week.
SNOOK - Chartreuse and white is the best color choice and when coupled with
a slow retrieve along the bottom the results can be surprising.
HALIBUT - Most of the sandy beaches have a few.
SIERRA - Still quiet.
