Baja Mexico: Magdalena Bay, Baja Sur & East Cape.

Baja Sur - Saltwater Fishing Report

REPORT FROM GARY GRAHAM'S BAJA ON THE FLY:

PROVIDING QUALITY SALTWATER FLY-FISHING 365 DAYS A YEAR IN BAJA

Sat., August 24, 2002

EAST CAPE AND MAGDALENA BAY FISHING CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Gregg Harris, Boozeman MT, arrived mid week with a flybox full of miniature versions of our see thru deceivers that I had advised him to tie. For the past few days using his flies and with our guide Ed Kunze he caught dorado, roosters, jacks, pargo and averaged double digit catches every day he fished. With hurricane Fausto heading out to the west we can expect more of the same kind of fishing for the upcoming week. Be sure to read Pete Thomas’s article in the Friday L.A. Times.

AIR & SEA - Perfect weather with light breezes in the p.m.

Hi 93°

Lo 75°

Wind: Light breezes in the p.m.

Humidity: 59%

Dewpoint: 69°

Visibility: 15

Water Temps 79 - 88

. OFFSHORE: Tuna and dorado were the main fare with a sailfish leading the way in the billfish department. sails, also a few stripes and blues. Most of the tuna were in the fifteen - thirty pounds with a couple fish in the gorilla class (100 lb or better)

. INSHORE: My lead in today tells you how good the inshore is. Remember my comment last report about when the action slowed down to try your luck using a olive Clouser around some of rocky points. Gregg Harris took my advice and ended up with twelve pound pargo

. BEACH: Gray light, sundown, low light, get it, be there! You won’t be disappointed.

BILLFISH – Here is your chance if you are looking for a sailfish on the fly. After that, you may get a shot at a striper as well.

YELLOWFIN TUNA – Most of the fish reported were at least 20 – 30 miles from the beach which means you are pretty much committed to tuna for the day.

DORADO – Still plenty of the larger variety on the outside and more schoolies closer to shore.

ROOSTERFISH – OK, the smaller guys (up to fifteen pounds) are close to shore and you should catch plenty. If you want to try your hand at the big guys then use a slow trolled mullet without a hook to tease one up. When the big guy shows up switch the mullet for a larger fly (5 inches at least) with either a light olive or beige back and retrieve it as fast as you can. We have been seeing plenty so you should have a good time.

JACK CREVALLE – Plenty of smaller ones mixed in with the roosters feeding on Sardinia. Every once and a while you find some of the larger fish mixed in.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK – Plenty of smaller ones.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Rock structure holding a wide variety of critters.

SIERRA – An incidental catch now and then.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., August 24, 2002

IN GENERAL: Still good reports of larger yellowtail at the Thetis Bank. Reports persist that more and more marlin are being seen as well as dorado 210 degrees some fifteen to thirty miles out. Up in the esteros there was no angling activity reported for the week. Devils Curve and Mario’s spot are your best bet for snook, grouper and pargo.

AIR & SEA: Hot with little wind.

Air Temperature 69 - 80

Water Temperature 69 - 76

YELLOWTAIL - You are going to get down in the water column so use a Baja

Deep Diver and 300 grain shooting head. These same techniques will apply for the white sea bass. If you do hang a fish down deep try not to let it run much or it will rock you in a heartbeat.

CORVINA – A few smaller ones at Power Plant, bridge and near the pier.

SNOOK – Deeper holes along the main channel will be your best bet.

HALIBUT – Still at the stock spots any sandy beach will probably yield a few.

SIERRA – Slow, but Punta Belcher is the best bet.
