EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: John Malinski, Paradise Valley, Ariz., and his two sons had a
couple of banner days over the weekend with dorado and tuna until they said
uncle. Tuna to 40 and dorado to 20 pounds kept them busy both days. The new
red Baja Deep Diver seemed to be the hot ticket. But Mon. it was back to
business as usual with the wind howling out of the North.
AIR & SEA -
Water temperature 69-72
Air temperature 63°-82°
Humidity about 83%
Wind WNW at 7 mph
Conditions (FEW) : 10,000 ft Mostly Cloudy (BKN) : 20,000 ft
Visibility 12 miles
Sunrise 6:54 a.m. MST
Sunset 6:09 p.m. MST
Feb. 9 First Quarter Feb. 16 Full Feb. 23 Last Quarter Mar. 2 New
· OFFSHORE: Still a surprisingly strong showing of dorado and tuna
between the North winds.
· INSHORE: Sierra are the best bet with jacks coming in second if you are
courageous enough to not use wire.
· BEACH: Even on the non-windy days, the conditions don't have time
enough to settle down before the wind blows again.
BILLFISH - Plenty of sighting, but still no biting.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Look out. These are not the football variety.
DORADO - Most of the fish are above average in size.
ROOSTERFISH - Find some sardina and you may get lucky.
JACK CREVALLE - Wire no, lose flies to sierra probably.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - Forget 'em. Go look for tuna and dorado!
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Try a popper around some of the rocky points and hang
on.
SIERRA - Just before sunup or late afternoon on the calm days is the best
time.
MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Wed., Feb. 05, 2003
IN GENERAL: This time of year the whales are the primary focus with
sportfishing taking a backseat. A few yellowtail over at the entrance to
Santa Maria Bay and fair grouper fishing on the south side of the entrada at
Magdalena Bay. Up in the esteros, the corvina and spotted bay bass are
almost a slam-dunk with the pargo, grouper and snook a little tougher.
Water Temperature 67-71
Air Temperature 60°-80°
Humidity 85%
Wind Calm
Conditions Mostly Cloudy
Visibility 3 miles
Sunrise 7:05 a.m. MST
Sunset 6:14 p.m. MST
Feb. 9 First Quarter Feb. 16 Full Feb. 23 Last Quarter Mar. 2 New
YELLOWTAIL - Best bet is out at the entrada in deep water at Santa Maria
Bay.
CORVINA - Good fishing and an occasional take on the surface, good time to
try some of those surface poppers.
SNOOK - Only an occasional one, next month should be better with the
lessening tides. IGFA has created a new category for Pacific snook, so there
could be a few world records in Magdalena Bay’s future and maybe yours.
HALIBUT - Usually the sandy beaches are best, but we have been getting a few
up in the esteros.
SIERRA - Look for them under the birds out in the open areas of the bay.
