EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Fish stories. I can't get very far down the beach without

someone stopping me to tell me his or her latest. Johnny Montgomery,

Albuquerque, and his friend Luther finished up their trip on Tues. and had

scored on dorado (65 pounds), plenty of tuna and topped it off a wahoo that

was big enough to feed the whole dining room at Buenavista Beach Resort. The

Potters (you remember them) fished into the dark on Sun. and had wide-open

action, catching ladyfish, pompano and missing a few smaller roosters in

front of Mark Rayor's home. Speaking of Mark, he is in his annual swordfish

hunt mode, finding one down toward Cabo Pulmo he slow trolled baits to it

and sure

enough as the rigged dead bonito was trolled past the swordfish it sunk and

the reel began singing, Mark came tight, only to have a huge dorado come

leaping out of the water. I take heat every time I mention this, but here

goes - bonefish are biting at La Ribera. They are small ones although I did

hear of someone laying their rod down to photograph a buddy's fish and their

rod with a bonefish attached was last seen heading for Mazatlan.

Lastly, our guide Lance Peterson, maintaining Baja on the Fly's strict

policies that if you aren't guiding you are fishing, reported plenty of

shots at Bubba. And, are you ready for this? A huge dorado (his words not

mine) chased his fly practically up to the dry sand before turning off. May

and Fish Stories are a time honored tradition here at East Cape and I'll bet

they get even better next month!

· OFFSHORE: Plenty of action including billfish (Stripes & Sails),

30-pound tuna (just right for the fly rod), dorado to 65 (hand me my

12-weight) and maybe if you treat the fish gods with respect a shot at a

wahoo.

· INSHORE: Roosters and jacks have come a calling and will beat you up if

you are not careful.

· BEACH: All I can say is that the beach is challenging and that is in a

good way. There are so many different critters of all sizes that you don't

know which rod to use. An 8-weight for bones, ladyfish, pompano and small

jacks, a 10-weight for Bubba Jr. or a 12-weight for Bubba Sr. which could be

a rooster to 50, a jack to 25 or a dorado that got stupid.

BILLFISH - Bring on the sailfish, can the blues be far behind?

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Plenty of football-size and some better quality mixed in

this week.

DORADO - Close to the beach is an understatement.

ROOSTERFISH - Records to be set, personal best to had. What are you waiting

for?

JACK CREVALLE - It is good and the sardina aren't even here.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - OK, if that is what you are looking for.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Not bad, but who cares with all the roosters and jacks.

SIERRA - No one is targeting them, but there are a few at Punta Colorada or

La

Ribera around the bait receivers.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Wed., May 14, 2003 Report covers the period Sat.-Tues. (5/9-5/13)

IN GENERAL: Beginning with Devil's Curve and working back down to Puerto San

Carlos produced a mixed bag yesterday (5/12) with a few small snook, jacks,

pompano,

corvina and a couple of grouper providing enough action to keep the clients

busy. I will be in San Carlos later today to meet four clients that will be

fishing for the next three days. This is my first visit since Jan. and I

can't wait. We will be doing some exploring in some rumored hot spots and I

will fill you in on Sat.

YELLOWTAIL - Pretty slow except at Thetis Bank.

CORVINA - Fair with a few being taken on the surface with poppers.

SNOOK - The ones caught recently have been in the five-pound class.

HALIBUT - The skinny water along the sandy beaches at Punta Belcher is still

producing a few of the larger variety (5 -15 pounds) if you put in the time.

Sight casting for halibut? What can I say?

SIERRA - Quiet for now.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice a week)

reports for this area.

Sat., May 10, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (5/7-5/10)

IN GENERAL: The main story and the action is tuna. The yellowfin tuna are

here in incredible quantities and the boats are getting some fantastic

counts. Most of the action is only 3- to 8-miles out of Zihuatanejo Bay.

Don Mawhorter of Seattle, Wash. and Steve Jarred of Berthoud, Colo.,

experienced a perfect example of the excellent fishing we have. The first

day, fishing with Santiago on the panga "Gitana," they caught 30 yellowfin

tuna and 1 sailfish. On the second day they fished with Adolpho on the panga

"Dos Hermanos." This inshore trip yielded 20 jack crevalle in the 15- to

20-pound class and one roosterfish of 50-pounds.

Along with the tuna, the blue marlin have been very active. Several have

been taken and all within 5-miles of the beach. The main reason the marlin

are here is the abundance of black skipjack tuna.
