EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: We’re experiencing flat calm weather with so many football-size

tuna that you’d think that East Cape was the home of an NFL training camp. A

consistent billfish bite and an OK dorado bite has everybody waking up in

the morning wondering where to go: beach, inshore, offshore or just kick

back and hang out at the pool bar. Matt Tofanelli, Bloomington, Minn., and

his gang are doing just that (today is a pool day). Beach, pontoon boat and

panga have all been crowd pleasers for them. If you

have a hankering to get your string pulled and your rod bent this was the

placed to be this week.

· OFFSHORE: Been a little lumpy on the outside, but worth it for the tuna

and billfish.

· INSHORE: Start with a few ladyfish, then hit the pompano school with a

Crazy Charlie-size fly, slow troll a mullet teaser and see if you can take

it away from Bubba and make him believe a hook with feathers is better for

him and then back to the bar for a celebratory margarita.

· BEACH: VROOM, VROOM! with an ATV as your pony, look out roosters,

jacks,

ladyfish, pompano and don't forget the halibut. Here we come.

BILLFISH – There are more stripers, less sails, a couple of blues. Who

needs a billfish fix or a chance to practice for Flyrod Marlin 101 in the

fall?

YELLOWFIN TUNA - So many there is a wasabi shortage reported throughout East

Cape.

DORADO - A few, but not exactly a barn-burner this week.

ROOSTERFISH - More small than large, but enough to keep our clients doing

the

Baja two-step, chasing them down the beach for a shot.

JACK CREVALLE - Out where the hotel boats anchor lurks a record or two, off

the beach mostly the smaller variety.

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - La Ribera to Punta Colorada is the best bet.

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Caught one in front of the house and not a rock in

sight.

SIERRA - A few bigger ones are on the grab along the drop-off at Punta

Arena.

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Sat., June 14, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (6/11-6/13)

IN GENERAL: Forget the outside unless you just want to bump on the lump.

Stick to the esteros and do some exploring. Weather is beginning to turn

around and we may have a summer after all.

YELLOWTAIL - They are there if you dare.

CORVINA - Have definitely been our go-to fish so far this year and that

ain't all bad.

SNOOK - The rascals must have their heads in the mud because we sure

couldn't find them this week..

HALIBUT - Right behind corvina in number caught this year.

SIERRA - Quiet for now.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice a week)

reports for this area.

Sat., June 14, 2003 Report covers the period Fri.-Fri. (6/6-6/13)

IN GENERAL: The blue marlin fishing has held its excellent pace. We have a

lot of barrilete (black skipjack tuna) and the marlin are feeding on them. A

slowed trolled barrilete, with a large 10/0 hook bridled in front of the

eyes has really been producing. The majority of the big blues have been

hitting between 12- and 14- miles.

David Stolfi of Dallas fished with Luis Marciel on the panga “Gringo Loco.”

He first caught a 101-pound sailfish, and 5 minutes after the lines were

back in the water he caught a 250-pound blue. Captain Cali on the “Vamonos

II” caught one marlin and lost another.

The private yacht “Mystery Strike” released 6 blue marlin this week with

captain Margarito.

Fly-fishing client, Terry Carter, has been fishing with Santiago all week on

the panga “Gitana.” He is averaging one sailfish a day, caught and released

on the fly.

Adolpho on the panga “Dos Hermanos” has been fishing with client Ed Gousink

from France and is averaging 4 to 5 roosters a day weighing between 25- and

35-

pounds. Armando on the panga “Janeth” got two huge 60-pound roosters at

Mahaua

Beach and only 5 minutes from the entrance to Zihuatanejo Bay.
