EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Football-sized tuna and a 9-weight flyrod add up to Fun, Fun,
Fun. Factor in some sashimi and margaritas in the evening before a walk on
the beach to sight-cast to boiling fish. That was the story for Richard Naimark, Plainsboro, N.J. along with his friend Allen Schlift, who are enjoying their respite from the East Coast rainy weather. Yesterday (6/17) was Richard’s first time catching tuna on
the fly and judging by his enthusiasm it won't be his last. Those tuna must be real
confidence builders. Last night he and Allen were planning their assault on an
unsuspecting marlin this morning.

· OFFSHORE: Two schools of tuna spread the fleet out over Las Palmas Bay.
A few quality dorado and an occasional billfish wore everyone out and had
them racing for the pool by 2.
· INSHORE: Roosters are strung out from Los Barriles to Punta Arena close
to the shore. Typically finicky, as usual, but plenty of shots and every
once in a while one grabs your fly and tries take it to Mazatlan. Jacks,
under the boat moorings along with some pargo in double digits to finish up
the day.
· BEACH: Pompano, ladyfish, small jacks and even a halibut early morning.
BILLFISH - Time and tenacity will provide you enough shots to keep the day
interesting.
YELLOWFIN TUNA – In a word, plenty.
DORADO - No schoolies here. If you get one, it will be a good one.
ROOSTERFISH - The sun gets high enough to light up the shallows and suddenly
you see a dark shape swimming toward you in at a leisurely pace. Get ready,
cast, strip, strip, faster, faster. The rooster sees the fly, wham! Fish on
and the party begins. Baja Beach Flingers rejoice. It is summer in Baja.
JACK CREVALLE - Look out! They are here.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - La Ribera to Punta Colorada is the best bet.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - Pay attention and you may get a sight-casting
opportunity on one of the sandy beaches.
SIERRA - Oh well, if you have to, try Punta Arena.

IN GENERAL: Offshore is still lumpy, grumpy and no fun; stick with the bay
or esteros for now. The usual spots are producing fair fishing. Now is the
time to spend more time
exploring and less time sitting in one spot.

YELLOWTAIL - Bird schools are your best clue out toward the entrada or
outside if the seas permit it.
CORVINA – Experiment. They are biting almost any fly that hits the water.
SNOOK - Different story here, you will have to work at it to get lucky.
HALIBUT - Got Clousers? Get halibut, try Belchers or any other sandy beach
you find.
SIERRA - Quiet for now.
