EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS

EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

IN GENERAL: Daniel Vapnek, Santa Barbara, CA hit the beach at zero dark hundred Thursday (7/24) and encountered what our guide, Jeff DeBrown, claimed was the toughest beach day this year. Runoff has turned the water an ugly coffee color that has pushed everything away from the beach. A couple of small pargo were all that could be found. Even our mainstay for the past few months, tuna, took a powder and the results were what only could be described as sporadic.

However, not all the news was bad, The beaches at Primera Piedras south of Bahia Muertos was the place to be for roosters and farther up in that direction, Cerralvo yielded some good catches of dorado and billfish. Speaking of billfish, Jesus Arriza, veteran Captain of "Eclipse" out of Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort, stumbled into a spot of sailfish outside the lighthouse with sailfish as far as he could see. Good sailfish year? Could happen.

· OFFSHORE: With boats headed out in every direction in the morning, it is clear there are too many hotspots. In the evening at the bar, you can tell the winners by the "high fiving" and the losers who are huddled together planning a new strategy for the next day's fishing.

· INSHORE: Stay on the color line between the coffee color and the clean green water and you will be pleased. Roosters, jacks, sierra and ladyfish will make the day go by quickly.

· BEACH: Arrg! I hate it when this happens; off color water caused by runoff is making it tough this week.

BILLFISH - Big spread of fish - as soon as they settle down it may get silly.

YELLOWFIN TUNA - Oops, they are spread out all over the place, from a few miles to fifty.

DORADO - Rumors of a Sargasso bloom have gotten everyone pumped up. Best direction is up toward Cerralvo.

ROOSTERFISH - Beaches above Punta Pescadero have the cleanest water and the roosters have figured it out.

JACK CREVALLE - Strung out along the color line from Rancho Leonero to Punta Arena

BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few small bonita and skipjack are mixed together under the bird schools close to shore

PARGO AND CABRILLA - Saved the day on the beach.

SIERRA - They are back and they are hungry. Don't forget the wire!

MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO

Saturday, July 26, 2003 Report covers the period Wed..-Fri.. (7/23-7/26)

IN GENERAL: I checked and it was not the 4th of July, but no one told the firecracker yellowtail that went off like it was at the Entrada this week. Double digit scores were the norm. Back in the Esteros, corvina, grouper and pompano suddenly came out of a several week old slump to put on a show the likes of which have been few and far between this season.

Water Temperature 67°-73°

Air Temperature 70°-82°

YELLOWTAIL - Wham! Bam! You should have been there. The Entrada broke wide open this week.

CORVINA - Schools with a few larger fish mixed in found from the Pier to Devil's Curve.

SNOOK - With all the activity, they could be next.

HALIBUT - Still there; just look for a sandy beach and use a chartreuse Clouser.

SIERRA - Check the bird schools strung out from Puerto San Carlos to the Entrada.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice a week) reports for this area.

Sat., July 26, 2003 Report covers the period Sun.-Fri. (7/19-7/25)

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is just off the beach and the fishing has been very good, though there are not too many anglers here to take advantage of it.

Arturo, on the panga, "Janeth", fished all week and released 6 sailfish for the two days he fished offshore. The rest of the time he fished inshore and took 20 roosterfish from about 25 to 50 pounds, and a bunch of jack crevalle.

Santiago on the panga "Gitana" fished one day and released 4 sailfish.
