EAST CAPE, MAGDALENA BAY AND ZIHUATANEJO CONDITIONS
EAST CAPE, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
IN GENERAL: ESPN film crews and big a Money Tournament being held this week were all it took to put the hex on fishing. Our mainstay, yellowfin tuna, moved so far offshore that by the time you found them no one could remember the way home. 252 tournament anglers only accounted for 11 billfish in two days. A few dorado (very few) under the shark buoys at Punta Pescadero rounded out a slow week. The good news is that ESPN went home and the tournament ends today (Sat.) and I promise things will begin to pick up.
Speaking of better days coming, if you haven't picked up a copy of the Aug./Sept. issue of Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine, you should. There’s a great article "Running Down Roosterfish" by Frank Smethurst featuring East Cape beaches and my personal favorite, big roosters caught from the beach.

· OFFSHORE: Fish scattered from Cerralvo to Las Frailes make it tough on
the crews as they seek the holy grail a wide open bite. Few succeeded.
· INSHORE: Even our mainstay got grumpy this week, only yielding a few pargo, ladyfish and, you know it is slow, triggerfish. We promise better times coming.
· BEACH: Ladyfish put on a show in front of Buena Vista Beach Hotel providing plenty of entertainment early morning and late evening.
BILLFISH - More spotted than caught; there’s not much bait to hold them.
YELLOWFIN TUNA - Sixty miles-plus for a football seems excessive.
DORADO - Right shark buoy and the smiles come back
ROOSTERFISH - Found a few in front of Rancho Leonero with lockjaw.
JACK CREVALLE - A few smaller ones at Punta Colorada.
BARRILETE OR MEXICAN SKIPJACK - A few schools sighted near the Tuna Slide.
PARGO AND CABRILLA - A few here and there
SIERRA - Still around if you can find some clean water.
MAGDALENA BAY, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO
Sat., August 09, 2003 Report covers the period Wed.-Fri. (8/6 - 8/8)
IN GENERAL: The entrada (entrance) has produced good action for firecracker yellows all week under the bird schools. Mixed in are some skipjack and bonito that can't sort out the difference between a baitfish and a Baja Deep Diver. Stop by Belchers on the way home and fish the shallows for the halibut. Tired of yellows and halibut? Go pound the channel at Devil's Curve you may get lucky and snake out a snook if the corvina leave you alone long enough

YELLOWTAIL - Snap! Crackle! Pop! Firecrackers at the entrada.
CORVINA - Not wide open, but plenty good.
SNOOK - They are here where. Are you?
HALIBUT - Try Belcher's in three foot of water on the north side on the point.
SIERRA - If you lost your fly you either had a bad knot or found 'em.
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
Please note the date. We are only providing weekly (not twice a week) reports for this area.
Saturday, August 09, 2003 Report covers the period Sun.-Fri. (8/02 - 8/08)
IN GENERAL: The action here in Zihuatanejo is basically a carbon copy of the
last two weeks.
We have a lot of bonito just 6-8 miles offshore and the blue marlin have been in the area feasting on this bait source. Most of the marlin are running on the small side with the average only being about 180 pounds. At least 3 boats in 10 are hooking a blue every day.
Two to three hookups per day per boat is the average for the sailfish.
Inshore, the roosterfish action is staying very consistent, with a lot of fish in the 30- to 40-pound range being released.
