The calendar may read “winter,” but fishing has been good with lots of small dorado north of town. Both pangas and cruisers are trolling to locate small schools of up to 20 fish, and then casting white and blue flies to catch followers. Sierra fishing by Punta Arena is excellent on sparsely tied white and green sardina flies. Sardina for bait is available at Cabo Pulmo. Some small roosters have been spotted at the lighthouse; I landed one yesterday evening. Marlin fishing has been good here and excellent at Cabo. Water temperature has been in the low 70s. North winds started today following Wed.’s low pressure system.

There’s “iffy” weather on the outside including rain. The few yachts traveling through the area reported a couple of marlin a day off of Punta Tasca and fair wahoo fishing from the ridge up. There also were reports of lots of football-sized tuna at the Thetis Bank. The esteros were lightly fished with mixed results including a few grouper and cabrilla. Rumors of a couple of whales being spotted up at Lopez Mateos has everyone anticipating the arrivals of the herds in the next few weeks.

Zihuatanejo, Mainland Mexico ****
No report this week. Here’s last week’s: Clean water is just off the beach and the majority of the boats are releasing 3 to 5 sailfish a day. I guided Scott Kelly from Juneau, Alaska for fly-fishing with Captain Martin on the panga “Isamar.” Before heading out that morning, from the Terrifin Satellite Surface Temperatures chart, I had noticed a well-defined area holding 80.5 degree water, with the rest of the areas all in a scrambled egg pattern of 83 to 85 degree water. The body of cooler water paid off with a huge sailfish tagged and released, and a couple of fly-caught yellowfin tuna. The sailfish was estimated at 120-pounds and the tuna were football-sized. There are lots of yellowfin here, with the majority of them in the 12- to 20-pound size. We did notice schools of 50- to 60-pound fish crashing on bait, but they proved to be elusive.

We had some windy weather again during the early part of the week that made fishing tough, but the conditions are great now. The better boats are still averaging double digit numbers on sails, but a few boats are having a really tough time of it. The dorado are also making a good showing to fill in the gaps in the day. We had no inshore report this week, and no marlin were released. We do have some remaining availability for the high portion of this season, but it is going fast! If you are thinking about going, you should contact us now.
