PISCES FISH REPORT
OCTOBER 15th to 21st, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 96%
BILLFISH: It's been pretty hectic with the weather here in Cabo these past couple of weeks, as it is quite unusual to have tropical weather so late in the year, which interfered with the tournaments. The Los Cabos Billfish ending up being a two day event and though we didn't take first place we were pleased that two of our boats were in the money. Payouts for this tournament in which 42 boats participated was as follows:
Ist to 3rd Place Team Bandit: Two black marlin 451 lbs & 550 lbs $420,875
1st Release Category Team Wildcatter five striped marlin $28,125
Daily Release Jackpot Team Get Over It one striped & one blue marlin $7,125
Largest Dorado Day One: Team Tenacious 52 lbs $7,862.50
Largest Dorado Day Two: Team Hang Em High 39.3 lbs $7862.50
Largest Tuna Day One: Team Reel Slippery Lizard 130.8 lbs $7862.50
Largest Tuna Day Two: Team Karma 336 lbs $7862.50
Largest Wahoo Day One: Rum Running 28.4 lbs $7862.50
Largest Wahoo Day Two: Bill Collector 32.5 lbs $7862.50
As we write this the Bisbee Tournament is about to finish its' third and final day, albeit this day is shorter with boats only fishing until 2.00 pm rather than the normal 5.00 pm, this is due to the port being closed for three days this week, as Hurricane Rick went by. Of course when the port is closed for so long this causes havoc with boats and anglers, as reservations get cancelled or piled up and everybody wants to try and get out. So far a 375 lb blue marlin was brought to the scale in the Bisbee Jackpot Tournament by team Mi Novia on day one and we just heard of a 305 lb blue marlin, just making the weight category aboard "Extraction" on the third day.
Bisbee Results on payouts are as follows:
1st Place Mi Novia 375 lb blue total winnings $436,602.00
2nd Place Extraction 305 lb blue total winnings $559,362.00
1st Place release division Ole Ole 1 blue released (on time) winnings $33,150.00
2nd Place release division Carpe Diem 1 blue released total winnings $11,475.00
In regular fishing news we are seeing an increase in billfish catches up this week to thirty six percent. With notable catches for Great Escape Jr. on October 15th for two striped marlin and eight dorado by the Old Lighthouse for Gary, Travis, Ross, Glenn, Shelly & Tim Smith from Lewisville, Texas. "Andrea" had three striped marlin releases plus five dorado for a group from our neighboring state of Baja California (north) for Francisco Ulbrich and friends. "Bill Collector" had a great day on this day too, for Mark Chiavetta and three friends catching and releasing two striped marlin, six dorado, four tuna and boating a 32 lb wahoo. Pisces anglers caught a total of 24 striped marlin, one sailfish and one blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches dominated again this week with eighty seven percent of boats catching form one to twenty in a day. Smaller fish are being released. Weights are from 15 to 55 lbs. Caught over a widespread location with bait and lures working. Our tally on this species for the four days we were able to fish was 264. Yellowfin tuna catches were slower this week with a little under ten percent of boats catching from one to ten in a day. The average was 15 to 40 lbs but we did have some larger ones, like a couple 120-130 lbs aboard Get Over It and some 90'lbs on Spartacus. Just a few wahoo this week, all small at under 40 lbs. The only other catch for our anglers was skipjacks.
LOCATION: Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate, some boats went to Punta Gorda looking for really big marlin but didn't meet with much success.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Rain from Monday to Wednesday, port closed these days, seas now calm and weather beautiful.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 84 F
BEST LURES: Bait was scarce as the port was closed, but we had frozen as a backup, green/yellow, black/orange, red/black, live caballito.
