More Blue Marlin Appear off Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
July 24, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

JULY 17TH TO 23RD, 2008
Overall Catch Success Rate 88%
BILLFISH: We saw a big improvement on fishing this week in Cabo, which came along with the hotter weather as predicted. A smattering of blue marlin was seen, mostly smaller ones around Cabo, but also some larger fish. At the East Cape a 500 lb blue was caught and we also heard of one that came in late that was estimated at 900 lbs…..however, until we see a photo we consider it unsubstantiated, though we heard from a reliable source. Here in Cabo Pisces had a couple of smaller blues one on "Spartacus" caught at the Cabrilllo sea mount by Dave Dahann from San Diego on July 17th and the other aboard "Valerie" 12 miles off Land's End by Kyle Davis from Tyler, Texas. Both fish were around 230 lbs and took green lures. Striped marlin catches also picked up very nicely with our top boat "Rebecca" releasing five on July 22nd, above Golden Gate by the Miller family from Sacramento, California. Other boats caught between one and three with fish being found both on the Cortez and Pacific side. Fishing was much more consistent this week sixty four percent of charters catching billfish. Pisces anglers caught a total of 46 striped marlin, 1 sailfish and 2 blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Fishing for smaller game was very consistent out of San Jose, where pangas loaded up on roosterfish, up to 8 in a morning per boat, red snapper, jack crevalle, bonita and quite a few smaller sharks both hammerheads and makos. The pangas also got the odd marlin and quite a few large dorado. Thirty three percent of boats caught dorado this week, between one and three fish each, up to 45 lbs. The Haldeman's from St George, Utah and Lake Forrest, California, respectively had the two largest dorado of the week, aboard "C Rod" (see photo below). Yellowfin tuna catches were not quite as good with just twelve percent of charters finding fish no large than 25 lbs. "Ruthless" did best on this species with 17 caught seventeen miles off of the windmill on the Pacific side by Douglas Patton and party from Tomall, Texas.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot, clear skies, sizeable swells on the Cortez side as well as some wind earlier in the week. Now turning calmer.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, Punta Gorda, Elias Calles, San Jaime, San Luis for pangas of San Jose.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 81 F
BEST LURES: Caballito, mackerel, sardines, green/blue, orange/yellow.
