Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

BILLFISH: Wow what a great week for fishing in Cabo…the weather has cooled off due to rain on several days and every boat out caught fish…it doesn't get much better than that. However, not everybody caught billfish; in fact just half of the boats caught striped marlin or sailfish, with no sightings of blue or black marlin. That's not to say that they are not here, it's just that boats went for the more sure thing, on the Pacific around Golden Gate were dorado was guaranteed and a billfish was a nice bonus. Up in the Sea of Cortez beyond San Jose, I am pretty certain there are some big fish, but it is more hit and miss. On September 12th, "Rebecca" did very well to release four striped marlin and boat three dorado at Golden Gate for John Johnson, Patrick Matthews, Mark Tuck & James Ball from Little Rock, Arkansas. "Ruthless" tired their anglers on September 15th with a sailfish, a striped marlin and twenty one dorado for Stuart Orrey & Maurice Tinsley form Nottingham, England. This same boat next day out with the same anglers aboard released three sailfish and boated seven dorado. Pisces anglers caught a total of 30 striped marlin and 11 sailfish this week all of which two were released.
OTHER SPECIES: There is no doubt that dorado was the number one fish in Cabo this week. Every single boat out caught this eating fish, giving us a whopping total of 423 caught ranging from 15 to 40 lbs. Catches ranged from one to twenty five fish per boat, with many being released. Lures worked best with several colors working well such as green/yellow, orange/brown and sometimes live bait. The majority of catches were on the Pacific. Twenty seven percent of charters caught yellowfin tuna, though sizes were regular at best, between 20 and 50 lbs. The amount of tuna caught per boat was on the slow side at one to five per boat. We had one solitary 40 lb wahoo. Boats did not fish inshore this week, so we do not have smaller game to report.
LOCATION: Predominantly the Pacific side at Golden Gate, though one day boats went to Punta Gorda on the Cortez side to avoid bad weather.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Local early, morning rain on two days, now sunny, clear with calm seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82 F
BEST LURES: Live bait was scarce this week and when available it was not the captain's first choice, seeing as it was caballito and not mackerel. Yellow/green combinations, red/yellow/brown.
