Fishing Report: 9/3/12 to 9/10/12
. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: Water temperatures are still very warm according to Terra Fin. With these consistent water temperatures we are sure to be catching lots more fish. All over the fishing grounds water is warm from Pacific side to Gordo Banks. Average is around 82.
WEATHER: We have had some pretty decent weather the last few days. Its still hot and humid, but we have seen more clear days lately. No rain over the last week and some real nice days. Today looks a little cloudy but I don't expect any rain. Weather forecast for today is: Some clouds and possibly an isolated thunderstorm this afternoon. High around 90F. Low around 75F. Winds ESE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 30%. So really it's a good time to come to Cabo because the fishing is good, not a lot of tourists, and the weather forecast for the next week is about the same as todays weather which is really nice.
BAIT: Plenty of live bait and Caballitos around. They are the normal 3 dollars a piece.
BILLFISHING: Well what a difference a week makes for Blue Marlin. There was a 650 pound Blue caught up at the Golden Gate trolling live Tuna. We have had good reports of Blues all week with a 350 pounder and respectively another 300 pounder reported over the past few days. These fish were caught all in the same area around the Golden Gate on the Pacific side of the fishing grounds. Lots of Sailfish are being caught in all areas from the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific. Some boats have been hooking up with 2 or 3 Sailfish Our own Bob Marlin caught a Sailfish and a Striped Marlin on Thursday, and they also landed 20 Tuna from 15 to 30 pounds. The Striped Marlin were caught around the 1150. Black Marlin has been reported in the Gordo Banks area. We are seeing the big Blues and Blacks much more now than we did before ,so it looks like the Marlin fishing might get that much better.
TUNA: Lots of Tuna were found this past week. The Tuna offshore have been caught in the 1150 area of the grounds all the way to the Golden Gate on the Pacific. Most being caught on squid, ballyhoo using spreder bars. Spotting the Porpoise was the key and if you saw birds with them, you were in luck. Most of fish caught were between 8 and 15 pounds but there was some in the 20 to 40 pound range. I did hear of several larger fish, between 80 and 150 pounds. The inshore Tuna bite has also been good from Grey rock to the Pump house. These fish were biting striker kings and cedar plugs and most were in the 10 to 15 pound range.
DORADO: The Dorado seem to be all over the place and not just in one area. They seem not to be in big schools but more like one or 2 at a time and good sized fish upwards of 35 pounds. The Dorado caught closer to shore were caught on small hoochies and from Grey rock up to the Pump Station seem to be where numbers of the smaller Dorado seem to be hanging. The smaller Dorado around 12 to 15 pounds. The EastCape seems to be hot with Dorado as we speak. Gordo Banks was producing good numbers of fish with most being caught trolling lures. Even using cut bait has been working well to catch large numbers of Dorado.
INSHORE: Fishing inshore has been good for smaller Tuna and Dorado. Grey rock to the Pump Station has been producing in numbers. Some Grouper and Red Snapper were caught by some of the local fisherman who sell to restaurants. These guys have some special spots that produce fish all the time. If you want bottom fish, follow these guys out one morning and see where they go but they don't even fish with rods just line . Good Luck.
WAHOO: I have heard of some Wahoo strikes this past week. The Wahoo fishing is spotty and we are hoping to see a few more around soon.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
