Fishing Report: 9/10/12 to 9/16/12
. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: There have been some pretty good size swells this past week. So big that the pot captain did close the port for a couple days which pretty much stopped the fishing for a day or two.. Although the days we were able to go out we killed them. The storm that passed by us was producing these larger than normal swells. Water temperatures are still very warm all over the fishing grounds and we expect with this warm water in the area that fishing will stay excellent.
WEATHER: The weather has been real typical September weather with some days of rain and one night of pretty strong winds. Lots of thunder and lighting for a couple of days and it did scare the crap out of my dog. Its hot and humid and things need to dry out a bit. Today and yesterday have been really mostly clear with some breezes but really nice. In case you are coming to Cabo in the next few days this is what you can expect:

BAIT: Plenty of live bait and Caballitos around. They are the normal 3 dollars a piece.
BILLFISHING: Well lots of Sailfish this past week with many anglers scoring there first Sailfish or Marlin. Lots of the Cabo fleet boats had 2 or 3 Sailfish caught and released on the same day. On the Bob Marlin we did do good with Striped Marlin and Sailfish about 5 miles straight out from the arch. Lots of fish in that area as well as the 95 and Golden Gate area on the Pacific side. Using live bait or frozen Ballyhoo seemed to be the method for catching the Sailfish and Striped Marlin this past week. In case you didn't know: The Striped Marlin has traveled up to 31 miles per day. The longest southern migration was 1,153 miles from the tip of Baja near Clipperton Islands in seventy-one days. The longest migration of any billfish was by a striped marlin, tagged and released near the tip of Baja, and then recovered 200 miles southwest of the Hawaiian Islands three months later, a distance of about 3,120 miles. Most of the striped marlin wander in the ocean alone, but they may be in pairs or schools. Sailfish eat squid, octopus, mackerel, mullet, flying fish, needlefish, tuna, and jacks. Although they travel in deep water, they will usually feed in mid-depths. Sailfish in the Pacific are larger than Atlantic Sailfish. The Pacific Sailfish are 50 to 100 pounds normally. The most common fishing methods for Sailfish is trolling strip bait , often in combination with plastic squid. Trolling surface lures. Trolling or drifting live bait mullet or mackerel. Deep trolling baits or lures. Sailfish prefer water temps to be (68 - 88 Fahrenheit). The typical place of finding Sailfish is reefs where warm current is running close inshore or in open ocean around bait fish.
TUNA: The Tuna bite has slacked off to what it was the week before, but there are still numbers of Tuna being caught . Normal size being caught over the past few days is 10 to 30 pounds. There was even some schools reported right out in front of the bay . I didn't hear of a lot of big Tuna this past week, but there were still quite a few around, just not in the numbers they were the week before.
DORADO: Lots of Dorado inside the Golden Gate and 5 miles straight out from the arch. The Dorado seem to be a little picky on what there taking, but if you stick it out there are large Dorado to be caught. On the Bob Marlin we did manage to catch a 55 pounder so it was well worth it. The Dorado seemed to like live bait or Ballyhoo slow trolled this past week. Lots of Dorado caught close to shore on the Pacific side , over the past week
INSHORE: Fishing inshore has been not bad for smaller Tuna and Dorado. Grey rock to the Pump Station has been producing . With the swells coming in this past week surf fishing and fishing in general close to shore was off somewhat. Some Roosterfish, Snapper and Grouper were caught but it was down compared to previous weeks. Some pangas were catching football size Tuna close to shore and some Dorado here and there.
WAHOO: I have heard of some Wahoo strikes this past week. The Wahoo fishing is spotty and we are hoping to see a few more around soon.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
