Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accomodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
2012 Cabo Tuna Jackpot Results
Tournament Results:
1st North Star 372 lb tuna total winnings $223,540.00
2nd Renegade Mike 266 lb tuna $95,240.00
3rd Dona Meche 262 lb tuna $2,420.00
Day 1 optionals Santana 224 lb tuna $92,000.00
Optional $10,000 pot two days, went to Maybe Manana who did not need a big fish, in fact theirs was just 97.7 lbs to win them $72,000.00.
Nice pay off for a 30.5 lb wahoo for team Baja Bait, who took the rollover to the second day and took home $79,200.
One hundred and twenty one teams signed up, making this the largest tournament held in Cabo in 2012. A field of mostly local charter boats, though a fair share or larger, private yachts also participated in the two days of fishing on Thursday and Friday
Day one saw twelve fish over 100 lbs come to the scale and five over 200 lbs – Team Renegade Mike stole the show when they weighed in a 266 lbs fish, caught aboard a 31 ft Bertram – a very nice fish and the thinking was that this was quite possibly the tournament winner. However, we knew that team "Santana" had a nice fish and a couple of the guys on board, had been on the record setting team of a few years ago that had landed a 383 lb - the current tournament record –The fish looked good, longer than Team Renegade's, but was it fatter? The answer was soon provided as the weighmaster called out "224 lbs". Team Santana trailed and walking away disappointed, not realizing that they were in the money, to the tune of $92,000.00 due to the jackpots they had entered. This day not a dorado or wahoo was weighed in over the 30 lb minimum
Day two, fishing this day was even better with thirteen fish over 100 lbs, five fish over 200 lbs and what ended up being the overall winner a 372 lb tuna, for team North Star
WATER: The water has been really fantastic over the last week and the tournaments. Nice temperatures and blue water has contributed to the success of the tournaments over the last 2 weeks. Water temperatures have been staying really consistent in the low 80,s.
WEATHER: The weather really has been fantastic this past week . The cooler weather really hasn't set in very much. It is still warmer than normal for this time of year. I have been here a long time and its normally much cooler by now. I am sure the weather will get a little cooler over the next 2 weeks.
BILLFISHING: With all the bait in the water the Striped Marlin fishing has been not to bad. 2 of our boats out on Thursday caught 6 Marlin between them. There has been some reports of a couple Blue Marlin around 250 pounds. Lots of Striped Marlin were in the Magdalena Bay area but we were doing pretty good here in Cabo also. Some reports of some Sailfish also being caught locally.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollares a piece and there has been plenty around.
TUNA: Well as the Tuna Tournament results have indicated there has been lots of big Tuna over the last week. Lots of Tuna in the 200 pound range and as you know the big Tuna that took the tournament at 372 pounds.
DORADO: The Dorado fishing has been really good and they are everywhere in the fishing grounds. You seem to catch them with anything you throw at them. There seem to be large schools of Mackerel up in and around the Golden Gate. We were making bait of the Light House and we got 15 Mackerel. This is the first time we have done this in a couple of years. Seems as if the bait is coming down from Magdalena Bay. Lots of sportfishers coming from San Diego had reported lots of game fish up there and all the Striped Marlin you wanted. With water temperatures dropping up north the bait fish are heading to warmer water so we expect the Mackerel to be in the area for awhile and the good fishing to continue.
INSHORE. The fishing inshore really has been some of the best we have almost ever seen when it comes to Dorado. The Marlin and Sailfish bite right offshore has made for a great week. Lots of the Pangas are getting in on the action and there catching Dorado, Tuna, Sailfish and Marlin not far offshore. Really all the Dorado you want from Grey Rock to Los Arcos. We have had some reports of smaller Roosterfish being caught inshore also.
WAHOO: The fishing for Wahoo has been pretty good lately. A few caught in the Tuna Tournament in the 20 to 30 pound range.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. With all the Mackerel in water in and around the fishing grounds we expect great fishing over the next 2 weeks. Really now is the time to come to Cabo and book a boat and experience this good fishing we have had over this past season.
