Capt. Jerry Chapman
December 16, 2012
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jc Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 12/9/12 to 12/16/12
.

Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accomodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: The conditions of the water haven't been to great this past week. A lot of our blue water turned to green water. Windy conditions earlier in the week didn't help and later in the week the rain had an effect on fishing. Water temperatures had dropped even before this past week and they are cooler now. Water in and around Cabo is in the mid 70,s according to Terrafin. Right around 76. At the 1150 it is around 78 to 79 and temps just off San Jose is around 77 degrees. Up around the Golden Gate the temps are a bit cooler at around 75 to 76 degrees. South east of the 1150 area is where the warmer water is and I suppose thats why a couple Blue Marlin were caught there this past week.
WEATHER: Windy conditions first part of the week really changed the water conditions and inshore fishing wasn't to hot, water had turned green. We had to run 7 to 10 miles offshore to get to Marlin and Dorado. The week has been a little cooler and it started off with some cloudy days with some times of sunlight. It really changed on Thursday when we woke up to rain. The rain continued off and on all day and then Thursday night it really started to pour and we got a good drenching. It was really enough rain to mess up the roads again almost like last summer. The rain started to slack off by Friday but it is still cloudy as I write the report on Sunday morning. The air temperature has gotton quite a bit cooler over the last 3 days. You can feel a pretty good change in temperature.
BILLFISHING: The Striped Marlin are really the fish being caught now. With cooler water temps the Blues and Blacks have gone into hiding. We always have the Striped Marlin though. It has been hit or miss the first part of the week we had to run like 5 to 10 miles offshore to find Marlin. We did pretty good catching 3 Marlin on the Bob Marlin. We were using live bait to entice the Marlin and it was working pretty good.
"Cabo is in a class by itself when it comes to striped marlin fishing...there are more striped marlin caught within 40 miles of Cabo year-round than any place else. It's no accident. Cabo is the crossroads for most of the marlin that migrate through this part of the Pacific, and it is home base for a large school of resident fish that never leave the area..If you have never wet a line before in your life, and if for some strange reason you absolutely, positively, must catch a striped marlin before next Thursday afternoon, your odds are better in Cabo San Lucas than any place else in the world."
.BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollares a piece and there has been plenty around. On Tuesday and Wednesday we ran into some Tuna swimming with the Porpoise.
TUNA: There were some schools of Tuna around but not many. The Tuna we caught were from 30 to 70 pounds. Really not to bad but it wasn't like they were everywhere you had to look and work for them. Cedar plugs were working good on the Tuna and also feathers were producing.
DORADO. The Dorado bite has continued to be pretty good. Not as good as it was last week but still good. First part of the week because of the windy conditions we had to run a ways to get to where the Dorado were and we did well. We ran into some nice schools of Dorado along with Striped Marlin. The Dorado were hitting cut bait and sometimes about anything you threw at them. Most of the fish we caught on the Bob Marlin were in the 15 to 30 pound range. There were some bigger ones caught but not many. I did hear of a couple 50 pound bulls caught on another boat. With the water temperature changing I think Dorado fishing will be more spotty over the next week or 2.

INSHORE: The Sierra bite is getting much better as we speak. Most are in the 4 to 10 pound range. On the Pacific seem to be where we are seeing most of the Sierra from Grey Rock up to the Light House. Water over the past 3 days close to shore has been dirty from the rain runoff so fishing hasn't been what it was at start of the week. There has been some Grouper caught in the rocks in about 50 to 60 feet of water. The Grouper were caught using cut bait. Some Red Snappers also were caught in the same areas mostly on the Pacific side. A few yellow tail have been caught up to 30 pounds. All in all the inshore fishing hasn't been to bad except for the last 3 days
WAHOO: The Wahoo as normal has been few and far between. When you do run into them they seem to be hitting Mauraders and Rapalas. Some fish to the 30 pound mark but most are 10 to 20 pound range. I haven't heard of many Wahoo being caught or any large Wahoo. You never know when this fish is going to show up.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
