Now is the time to come to Cabo as the fishing is still really good and not only that there is some really good deals on airfares lately as Spirit Airlines has some really good deals. You might want to look into this and also if you are in LA or San Diego you might think about flying out of Tijuana as the rates are much cheaper for TJ to Cabo. Just something to think about.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: We started off the week with some colder weather and no to good sea conditions. Windy and choppy first part of the week was making it harder to catch fish. Well the water temperature was around 69 on the pacific side earlier in the week and Sierra and Yellowtail bite was right on. Then the current changed and started bringing in warmer water from the Sea of Cortez which brought the temp up to 73 to 74degrees in some areas and that brought back the Dorado in a big way. Whatever the water temperature was or is, we are still having some really good fishing as a result of either.
WEATHER: The first part of the week started off a little cold with some partly cloudy and overcast days. Really not to bad compared to up north our highs were in the ladder 70,s to low 80,s then later on in the week it got a little warmer as temperatures rose to mid 80,s. It was also kinda of windy and a little sloppy on the water for a few days but today and last 2 days have been really nice. Forecast over the next few days are like this: wow today expected to go up to 87 and low of 61. Tomorrow will be 83 high / low 64 Monday high 80 / low 59 and Tuesday High 80 / low 58.
BILLFISHING: There was a couple days this past week of wide open Striped Marlin fishing with our boats scoring big one day landing and releasing 6 Marlin and another day 4 Marlin. Most of the fleet boats those couple days were landing 2 to 4 Marlin a boat really making for some fantastic fishing. Most of the really good action this past week was from the Light House to Los Arcos. We were really getting lucky using live bait but also the fish were going nuts over lures. Information Striped Marlin: A group of striped marlin will work cooperatively to herd shoals of prey fish into tightly formed "baitballs." After the bait ball is formed, they will take turns darting through it to feed. Striped marlin are the most widely distributed of all billfishes in the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting cooler waters (68-77 °F) than either the blue or black marlin. Their abundance increases with distance from the continental shelf, and they are usually seen close to shore only where deep drop-offs occur. Their distribution is unique among billfishes in that it forms a horseshoe-shaped pattern that is continuous along the continents of the eastern Pacific with two branches stretching west across the Pacific Ocean. Scientists have
limited information on striped marlin mixing, and it could be that they prefer to stay in localized areas as opposed to undertaking longer migrations. Striped Marlin can change its stripes: A pronounced pattern of 10 to 20 vertical body stripes running from head to
tail distinguishes the striped marlin from its cousins. Typically cobalt blue in color, the stripes "light up" to phosphorescent blue to lavender when the marlin is excited, such as when it is feeding. This rapid color-change is made possible by specialized skin cells called chromatophores that are controlled by the marlin's nervous
system. Scientists hypothesize that the brightly colored bars may confuse prey by breaking up the marlin's large, dark silhouette. All marlin have the ability to change their color patterns depending whether they are excited, fatigued or in courtship.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollares a piece and there has been plenty around. DORADO: Well we had a current change which brought in warmer water from the Sea of Cortez and that really helped pick up the Dorado fishing over the last week. Really over the last 3 days it has been going wild with many boats getting limits. Even the Pangas have been doing really well on Dorado. The best areas have been from the Light House to Golden Gate.
TUNA: Good numbers of Tuna have been caught from the 1150 to outside the Golden Gate. The Tuna have been running with the Porpoise. The Tuna caught were form 20 pounds to 50 pounds. Cedar Plugs seemed to be enticing them most. The water in this area around Golden Gate has been in the low 70,s really perfect for more Tuna and Dorado.
INSHORE: Tons of Sierras being caught its really going nuts. Most action is from Santa Maria to the Old Light House. Rapalas and Hootchies were catching the Sierra. There were also a few Yellow tail being caught but not in huge numbers. Snapper an Groupers have been caught in the rocks at about 40 to 60 feet using chopped bait. The local guys do real well from Pangas close to shore using this method of cut bait in the rocks. I have heard of a few Roosterfish but not a lot yet.
WAHOO: I did hear of some guys this past week doing real well on the Wahoo although I didn't really get the details of where and what they were caught on I did hear of some good catches.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
