Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report and Baja Fishing

Capt. Jerry Chapman
April 8, 2013
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jc Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 4/1/13 to 4/7/13
.
Now is the time to come to Cabo as the fishing is still really good and not only that there is some really good deals on airfares lately as Spirit Airlines has some really good deals. You might want to look into this and also if you are in LA or San Diego you might think about flying out of Tijuana as the rates are much cheaper for TJ to Cabo, just something to think about.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: The water seems to be a lot nicer this week with temperatures staying pretty much the same in most areas. We had times last week where water temps had varied from 65 degrees in one area to 73 degrees in another. So it was really up and down and effected the fishing big time.

WEATHER: Well you know the weather here, it has been really nice all through the spring break season and still really nice. Today the wind did pick some in the afternoon but it was a warmer wind. Then that wind really cooled down tonight. Highs in the ladder 80,s with lows in the ladder 60,s . It is just perfect.

BILLFISHING: Well things are winding down for spring breakers and the fishing has started to pick up again. Lots of marlin being landed this week inside the Gordo Banks also the 1150 and 95 spots were reporting 1 to 3 marlin a boat ranging in size from 120 pounds to 180 pounds. The marlin were enticed by live Caballitos and lures. There were reports of some marlin on the pacific side also but most marlin were landed down by Gordo Banks.
WHAT ARE CABALLITOS: This fish is characterized by its very large eyes and elongated body with a widely forked tail. It rather unique in its appearance, being rectangular in shape and not easily confused with other species. The Caballito is pelagic, widely distributed across the central Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, from Africa, throughout Micronesia and to the Eastern Pacific south to Ecuador. It forms large in-shore schools.
Distribution in Mexico fishing areas
In Mexican fishing waters , the Caballito is found occasionally in the Los Cabos area of Baja California, north along Baja's Cortez coast to San Felipe, and throughout all coastal waters of mainland Mexico. They are also common to all offshore islands including Tres Marias and Revillagigedos.
We are not aware of any other known Selars in Mexican waters, but of course there are an abundance of other members of the Jack Family.
The Caballito is reported to reach 14 inches in length, but is more commonly found at 6 to 7 inches. It is found up to 500 feet deep during the night, and in shallow water with sandy bottoms during the daytime. It is normally caught by net, although in Asia it is also caught by hook and line. It is a substantial food source for all tropical Asian countries, and is also widely used as a live bait by anglers. Caballito feed on small invertebrates, foraminifers, and shrimp when near shore, and on zooplankton and fish larvae when offshore. The Caballito and other Jacks are found in all tropical and subtropical seas, with 140 individual species having been identified to date. They are voracious predators feeding primarily on small fishes. They frequently travel in large schools and roam considerable distances, normally following schools of smaller bait fish. They are generally silver in color, and exhibit a wide range in size from about 10 inches and 1 pound, to 6 feet and 90 pounds.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollares a piece and there has been plenty around. DORADO: Well the Dorado are still around with some being caught this past week. There were a few big fish caught but most were small fish 8 to 13 pounds. It was a big surprise for us to still see the Dorado around this time of year. You never really know what will happen in Cabo. What happens in Cabo stays in Cabo!!!
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has just been so so. There has been some Sierras up at the Pump Station being caught. They were landed with Hootchies and striped bait. The Yellowtail catch has really been down this whole year. A few Groupers were caught up at Pedragal Rocks pitching live bait also some Snappers were caught up around Margaritas doing the same thing. The thing is you have to get in there when the swell is down otherwise it can be dangerous.

TUNA: I have not heard of any Tuna this week.
WAHOO: Wow, there were reports of Wahoo this week. The Wahoos were being taken in front of Grey Rock and there were reports of Mako Sharks being taken at the 95 spot.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon. Come by the office here in Cabo and get all the latest up to date fishing report.http://www.jcsportfishing.com http://youtu.be/tSXN6pifQyQ
