Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.

WEATHER: The weather has been really nice with highs in the mid 80,s and lows in the ladder to low 60,s. It really hasn't cooled like previous years yet as it is still slightly warmer than normal at night.
WATER: Conditions are starting to cool somewhat as expected this time of year. Conditions can vary widely, depending on location, time of day, and proximity to ocean and desert. The Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas, for example, is often ten degrees cooler than the downtown marina area, which Cabo's hills protect from chilly Pacific breezes. San Jose del Cabo, on the Sea of Cortez just 20 miles northeast of Cabo San Lucas, is often a few degrees warmer than San Lucas. Todos Santos, fifty miles north on the Pacific coast, is usually much cooler.
From The Admirals Kitchen: Preparing Roosterfish
While just about any fish is great to catch, one of our favorite is the big rooster fish that live all along the mid-pacific beaches & reefs. Most places the rooster fish is a catch and release game fish, but they've been known to be eaten by locals. If you ever find yourself opposite the business end of a pole and a dead rooster at your feet, there is a supposedly delicious way to prepare the very red meat rooster.
This recipe on how to cook rooster fish was given to us by locals in Baja. Filet the fish like you would a snapper. Clean the fish well, remove veins, and any other scraps hanging on to the meat
Next is to salt and dry the meat in the sun for 2 days.
After that you can slice it thin and fry it (with or without breading), eat it plain as an appetizer or add it to sandwiches, wraps, tacos, etc.
Fortunately We haven't had to give the recipe a test as recently the roosters have all managed to make it and swim away, if not a bit worse for the wear! Roosters put up quite a fight and small ones will come out of the water often, they have beautiful plumes in place of the dorsal fin which give them a unique look. They fight hard with head shakes and big runs. Its a must have picture in any anglers gallery
You can snag these beauties in a variety of ways, they are ferocious eaters and can be snagged trolling lures or live bait, jigging, with top water poppers around rocks and baitballs, bottom dropping chunks of bait, or free-spooling live bait (sardines, blue runners, bonita, mullet, and anything else that wiggles). They are most often found around beaches and rocks in mostly shallower waters, though we've seen big ones in some deep water. The often travel is small groups, so be ready with a pitch bait or a popper when one hits, there are usually 2-3 around it! The bigger they get the smaller the group becomes with a big ones 80+lbs lurking around alone.
BILLFISHING: The fishing has been super with all species being caught this past week. It seems all the good fishing has moved up north to the Pacific side from the San Jamie Banks to the Golden Gate. Lots of Striped Marlin and they seem to be hitting lures, Ballyhoo and live bait with some tipping the scales at 150lbs to 180lbs. So if you're here in the next day or so you might think about heading up on the Pacific side for some Striped Marlin action.
TUNA: The Tuna bite this year just hasn't been what we expected they just haven't shown up in the numbers we used to see. I am starting to wonder if the Japs haven't taken all of them with there long line vessels. The small football size Tuna we normally see this time of year haven't materialized.
DORADO: Really good numbers of Dorado the last week and they are being landed on lures and cut bait. There seem to be a lot bigger fish being landed than we have been seeing and they are tight to the beach about a half mile offshore.
INSHORE: The Pangas are catching Dorado from Solmar up to Los Arcos on lures and live bait. There have been a few reports of Sierra starting to roll in as the water cools some if your using Hootchies in tight to shore this will land you a Sierra. Some nice size Roosters are being caught as we speak in front of the Pedregal and up to the Light House they are being caught just off the surf line.
WAHOO: The Wahoo fishing has just been off the charts with this probably being one of the best years I have seen in 21 years being here in Cabo. The Wahoo seem to have shown up early and are staying later this season. The best results seem to be Jet Heads: Black and Pink also Purple and Black Maradures are working well. Trolling really fast at 9 to 11 knots in a zig zag pattern seem to be enticing the Wahoo. Get in on this action while you can!!!
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
