WEATHER: The weather is really great as we are starting to feel October temperatures upon us and that is good news. The weather is still pretty warm but there is a definite change in the air with night time dipping down to ladder 60,s to low 70,s. Day time temps are pretty much still up there with ladder 80,s real common but some days a little warmer. We are starting to get the wind from the north and that is bringing in some cooler weather compared to what we have been through this whole summer and then to top it off we had the hurricane. So all in all is has been a hot hot summer and were glad its winding down.
WATER: Temperatures are still warm in most of the Los Cabos area and this had made for some good fishing with some big Blue Marlin being landed. For sure they are following the warm water and so are the Dorado. BILLFISH: Well it has been a very busy week and really productive week as far as the Marlin fishing is concerned. Lots of Blues and Stripped Marlin being landed during the fishing tournaments and on our fishing charters also. Wow!! For the week, the 912 anglers from multiple countries caught 60 blue and six black marlin. That's a lot of fish caught over the last week or so. Our own Bob Marlin had a shot in the tournament as the Fat Farmer team had the big one on and ended up losing it and I suppose there is always next year. If you want to fish for Marlin get down here now as it has been hot for Billfish and I cant see it going anywhere to soon.
SAILFISH: Lots of Sailfish still around also with this warm water sitting here. The water is still in the low 80,s. The Sails are being landed on lures and Caballitos
DORADO: The Dorado fishing has been really good lately with some nice fish being landed from Grey Rock to Ranch Migrino on live bait and lures real close to the beach. Most have been from 15lbs to 30lbs. Really this area I mentioned has been a hot area for Dorado but all areas have been good due to the warm water in place through out our fishing grounds. The Dorado love that warm water and they feel right at home!!!
TUNA: We are gearing up for the Western Outdoors New Tuna Tournament coming up soon. The Tuna Jackpot Tournament will be going on through the 5th to the 8th of November and we are expecting a big Tuna to win it. There has been lots of Tuna caught lately but most are smaller ones closer to shore but there has been some big ones caught through the tournaments that were tipping the scales at 65lbs to 85lbs. WAHOO: A few Wahoo being landed this week with a couple in the 45lbs to 55lbs range. A good score!!!
INSHORE: Panga fishing has been good inshore for Dorado and small Tuna from Grey Rock to around the Solmar area and were caught using Sardines close to shore. The calm seas have really helped the inshore fishing as it makes fro a smooth ride and now worry about any rogue waves sneaking up behind you if you are in a Panga.
Western Outdoors News Tuna Jackpot Tournament
The countdown begins. As of Oct. 17 we had 80 teams signed up more are coming in for the 16th Annual Western Outdoor News/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament. Last year we hosted 136 teams and the last four years the tourney has grown in size. Where will end up is hard to guess, but it will be well over 100 teams.
There is plenty of time to sign up and either bring your boat or charter one.Bottom line, we never thought of postponing the tournament or canceling it after the Hurricane, and it was a good thing because the government, not wanting to lose an entire tourist season at its No. 1 destination (behind Cancun) and swarmed the devastated area to bring back basic service fuel power, food and security, as well clean up and rebuild. It has been an incredible thing to see. Mexico took care of its people. They are to be commended at all levels.
Gary Graham is down in Cabo now to cover the marlin events and send back photos of the region, particularly the marina. The place looks rebuilt, and while it has a ways to go, it is ready for tournament and cruise ship season. We were worried about the effect on the earlier tournaments. The first one, by Marlin Magazine in mid-month, was way down, to 12 boats. But the Bisbee's Offshore event, the "Baby Bisbee's" as its called, drew 81 teams, about the same as last year, a great sign. People want to come and support the area and, of course, have some fun and maybe win some big money.
Here's some aspects of the tournament to remind you about:
CHARITY CHARTER: There is the third annual Costa Charity Charter on Friday morning for non-entrants on the beautiful partyboat the Cabo Escape that is the official start boat both days. All proceeds from the $20 Costa sponsored charter go to Baja children's charities. It's a blast! It's beautifully catered by Pisces and Tony's with breakfast food and drink (mimosas too!), and the $20 we charge is way too inexpensive, so if you want to donate more, great. There's a lot of charity efforts going on. We will be out to break the $20,000 mark.
This tourney website at www.loscabostunajackpot.com is chock full of links to sponsors, information on the tourney, features, links to the official tourney(can be seen on a PC only, sorry) and its Facebook page.
The strength of a tournament is not how many teams it hosts. It doesn't hurt, but the true indicator is the sponsorships and I am not kidding, but we have everyone back, more coming down to party with us, and there's some new companies, too. We're very excited that his year we have Reactor watches, Simrad electronics and Mudhole rod components are joining the fold of sponsors.
TV SHOW! Reactor and it's beautiful watches stepped away last year but they are stronger than ever and fired up to come down and be a participating and attending sponsor. Reactor sponsors the Bill Boyce's Baja fishing show (worldfishingnetwork.com/bill-boyces-baja/) on the World Fishing Network (WFN) and the filming this year on Boyce's team will be on the show.
SIMRAD RADIO CONTROL: There's so much to get excited about this year. Simrad is coming down for the first time, and their marine electronics lineup is cutting edge. They are providing a GPS/Fishinder unit, two mounted marine radios and providing two high-end hand-held radios as the official Simrad Radio Control. This year we plan to work with teams far more during the fishing days, with Mike Packard answering questions about rules and schedule. New this year is that we are requiring any significant hookups to be radioed between 3 and 4 p.m. before lines out (4 p.m.).
WELCOME BAGS: Okay, the bags we gave out last year were BIG. This year at the welcome party, as the music plays by Tres Huevos on the stage, you'll be walking through the check-in line and getting so many free items it may take a while. An event hat (choice of pink, rust and plaid), an official cooler tote bag, Mustad hook packs, Simrad face buffs/sun protectors, beer coolies by Mudhole and also Deep Blue Marine/Simrad, Toggs cooler wraps, Eat Me Lure official boat flags (1 per team), Costa event long-sleeve t-shirts, American Fishing Wire/HiSeas wire packs, Seaguar fluoro coils for each team, free Terrafin maps of Cabo, and much more.
At all events, every day, Cabo Cigar Company will be wrapping custom cigars, and will have plenty of read-to go, freshly wrapped cigars with the Cabo logo. Minerva's will again be offering a new short-sleeve t-shirt with custom artwork, and these shirts at the check-in are the only shirts for sale for the event, and every dollar goes to the kids charity fund.
DRAWINGS: We can't list all the stuff for drawings, but the Grand Raffle will have four of every item we have for the drawings. That means four of the dozen Avet reels, four of the 22 big game Cousins rods (They are beefy, super high quality, and are made for BIG tuna) , four Reactor watches, Four hotel stays at the Wyndham, Seaguar fluoro packs, Mustad hooks, Plano tackle boxes. It's $10,000 worth of stuff. Oh yes, one of the Simrad marine mounted VHF radios is in the mix. All the tickets to the drawings over four days areas usual, at $5 each or five for $20, go to the charity fund. This is your way to contribute to local families.
EVENTS: Speaking of events, the site areas for the tourney will remain the same, thanks to the Cabo San Lucas officials, many of whom will be on the Costa-sponsored start boat Cabo Escape the first day. The mayor of Cabo has the most fun of anyone as she signals the official start of fishing and teams go roaring off into the distance. If you have not experienced something like the Cabo start, it is worth coming to tourney as an entrant. Hang on, it's a wild ride. And of course, the Show Us Your Costas Contest will be back by popular demand as will be the Yamaha Guess The Biggest Fish's Weight Contest.
FRIENDS/FAMILY: Many people ask about bringing family or wives, or friends. The Tuna Tourney is a great event to frame a vacation around. There are two sit-down dinners, three parties with drawings and video shows, friends and guests are welcome on each boat (2 allowed if room), the Friday Cabo Escape Charter from 6 to 8 a.m., and the exciting four-day event culminates after four days with a gala sitdown dinner for 650 people catered by Ruth's Cris at the beautiful Puerto Paraiso Mall next to the marina as the sun sets. It is Cabo at its most relaxing and elegant as the town celebrates it's sportfishing legacy.
So, you have a team, and how do you enter?
You can pay the team entry online by credit card at www.wonews.com (go to WON events on the home page and scroll down to the Cabo logo). You can sign up by credit card as a team, but not for any of the six tuna optionals or the wahoo/dorado optional. You must mail in optional entry money by personal or bank check with an entry form, or add those jackpots by wire transfer, with an entry form e-mailed or faxed or mailed.

Bisbee's Black & Blue Tournaments Results
As befitting the World's Richest Fishing Tournament, the Bisbee's Black & Blue, presented by IGY Marinas, did hand out a whopping $2 million dollars in cash prizes at the awards celebration Saturday night. But the real winners are a local orphanage for boys, as well as the citizens of Los Cabos. After Hurricane Odile slammed ashore last month and caused widespread damage, 125 teams heeded the call to fish anyway and came to town to help jump-start the vital economic recovery.
"In all honesty, up until a couple weeks ago I thought we were going to rally whoever was here at the Baja Cantina, throw some money in a hat and just go fishing to keep the tournament streak going," said Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee. "But thanks to all our fantastic anglers and sponsors, somehow we pulled it off and the results are just insane. We helped put a lot of people back to work, caught some good fish and we're definitely leaving Cabo in better shape than we found it."
Team Casa Hogar was the top winner this year. The 10 anglers and crew were fishing on behalf of the local non-profit organization that provides food, shelter and education to under-privileged Los Cabos boys. Angler Omar Castaneda scored the win after landing the biggest qualifying fish of the tournament, a 385-pound blue marlin. That fish took the overall team prize, tournament jackpot, top captain award (Capt. Ernie Cossio) and the Day Two $500 Daily Jackpot. The team is donating the $258,325 winnings to Casa Hogar.
In typical Black & Blue fashion, Sporty Game, entered across the board in all daily jackpot categories, waited until the final day to bring in the million-dollar fish. Carlos Cervontes whipped the 337-pound blue marlin in 18 minutes. That catch earned owner/captain Dan Lewis and the team a whooping payout of $1.682 million for second place in all team awards and the dailies. Lewis has been fishing the B&B since 2000. Sporty Game's catch this year represents the 12th time a team has earned more than one million dollars in the tournament's 34-year history.
Angler Dennis Bartos and Team Survivor are not going home empty-handed. Their blue marlin, tipping the scales at 328 pounds, earned a check for $42,187 for third place. Rounding out the top five, Baja Banditos pocketed $11,250 for a 320-pound blue, while Tepeyacos took fifth with a 304-pounder, good for $7,500.
In the tightly-contested Release Division, Mobius took top honors and the most money—$49,725—by releasing the first marlin based on time. Suzuka A, one of several teams from Japan, was second ($17,212) and Los Tapatios took third place and a check for $9,562. For the week, the 912 anglers from multiple countries caught 60 blue and six black marlin.
The Black & Blue slogan is "Come for fun, leave a millionaire." After the 2014 event, however, adding: "And Make a Difference" is certainly an appropriate exclamation point.

Sailfish recipe
We do not recommend killing a Sailfish but if you hook one and the fish for some reason cannot be released here is a recipe for that occasion.
1 lb sailfish steak (no skin)
2 green bell peppers 1 small onion
2 green onions
2 cloves of garlic
1 tomato
olive oil
sea salt and pepper
lime
First I lined a baking dish with aluminum foil (for easy clean-up) and sprayed lightly with cooking spray. I found a baking dish for only 20EC at the store so if you are like me and didn't have one, it isn't that expensive to buy and so handy. Then I sliced up the bell peppers and the onion. I laid these in the baking dish, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled on some sea salt and black pepper. Then I nestled in the fish which I pat dry and covered well with pepper and squeezed a few lime wedges over.
I sliced up some green onions reserving the top part as a garnish for after and sauteed the bottoms with some minced garlic. I toped the fish with the garlic-onion mixture. I sliced the tomato into thick slices and then laid them on top of the fish.
I covered the whole dish with some alumminum foil and placed it into my oven. The oven doesn't really have a temperature setting but instead a flame level so I choose a medium-high setting and cooked the dish about 30-35 minutes. The goal was to get the fish to flake off easily. I cannot say exactly my time and temperature combo, but I was aiming to allow it to bake in a 400 degree oven for about 40 minutes.
While it baked I made some simple white rice and cooked some fresh green beans to balance out our meal and presto – delicious fish dinner for two. I sprinkled the remaining green onions on top of the fish before serving and had some extra lime wedges for a little extra citrus punch. The lime helped to add some flavor to the rice as well.
I was actually surprised at how easy it was to make and it tasted so good. It was delicious and fresh. We didn't know what to expect, but sailfish might just make it into our more regular diet. I had actually frozen this piece from a few weeks ago and it still tasted great so I have no problem buying a little extra just to have stuff on hand.
BEWARE: Please beware of the guys in the street selling boat charters. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
