Manuel causes Port to Close for 3 Days!!!!!
Port Closes Because of Slow Moving Tropical Storm Manuel
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: The water is a little stirred up as it is trying to recover from tropical storm Manuel. Its really now just starting to get back to normal. It seems to be getting blue again. The swells this time of year are always a little bigger as we get waves from storms down south. On the pacific side swells are about 3 to 6 feet and on the Sea of Cortez side normally 2 to 4 feet.
WEATHER: First part of the week when weather wasn't to good with tropical storm heading our way and closing the port. Finally after the storm skated by us the weather suddenly got really nice and even we got a cool breeze from the north with a full moon. It really looked as if October weather had arrived. Well that lasted a couple days and as I am writing this report it is Sunday night and a little humid outside and we don't have the cool breeze we had for a couple days. It is still really nice as today was really pleasant.
BILLFISHING: The Marlin fishing is really good when we can get out of port to get to them. The calmer seas had help us over the last 3 days start to get back to normal since Manuel passed by us. Still lots of Billfish and Sailfish in the area and if weather conditions are right you will catch something I am sure of it. Could be a Sailfish or Marlin but fishing has been so off the hooks lately (when weather permits) that it is hard not to catch something. The 1150 and 95 spot seem to be the same old reliable areas that are producing fish again.
TUNA: Its been good for Tuna again this week with some in the 40 to 60lbs range being reported. Most reports of good Tuna fishing has been off shore 6 to 12 miles. Cedar Plugs and King Busters were enticing the fish and lots of 20lbs to 30lbs Tuna being caught.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around:
DORADO: Lots of nice size Dorado being taken from 20lbs to 45lbs on live bait, ballyhoo and lures. Really it has been pretty wide open in all areas for Dorado there really isn't any particular area producing more than the other it is just running into them and really there is a good chance of that right now. I walked into Griceldas Smokehouse and they were vacuum packing lots of Dorado and loading them into an ice chest and it wasn't a small ice chest either. The Dorado are here and around and if you get down here to Cabo soon there is a very good chance you will get into the action.
INSHORE: Still really good the fishing inshore as long as the weather holds everything is really good lots of smaller Dorado, Tuna, Roosterfish and Grouper being taken close to Grey Rock, and all the way up to the Pump House. Fishing seems best about half mile to a mile offshore trolling with lures and even using live and cut bait in about 50foot of water in the rocks to land the Groupers. You will also catch some Dog Snappers in the rocks using cut bait in 30 to 50ft of water. If your in a Panga watch out for any rogue waves that could sneak up behind you.
WAHOO: I heard of a couple being caught and both were in the 40lbs range.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
