Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.

We did see a slight swing downward about the middle of the week where we WATER: Water has been really warm with average temperatures about 84 to 87 were seeing 81 to 83 degrees in some areas mainly on the Pacific side. The water is mostly blue and warm in most areas with swells 3 to 5ft on the Pacific side and 2 to 4ft on the Sea of Cortez side.
WEATHER: The weather is getting real nice and is starting to cool down some. You can really notice a difference at night we are starting to pick up a cooler breeze from the north at night indicating we are having a weather change and October is in the air. The wind seems to also have layed down quite a bit over this past week making for some smoother boat rides while your out fishing. Really has been nice weather this past week with about every day being sunny and warm then cooling down at night. There was one or two days of over cast for part of the day but really it has been really nice. I am sitting here writing the report now and looking out the window it's a great sunny day with very light breeze and around 80 or 85 degrees. The reason everyone goes to Cabo is what? FISHING and GREAT WEATHER!!!!
BILLFISHING: The Marlin fishing has been really good this past week with a large Blue Marlin 500 pounds caught on our boat on Saturday using a lure to entice him. The 1150 area is where the Blue Marlin was caught and we also on Thursday landed 3 Sailfish and 2 Striped Marlin. So for Billfish this past week has been really good. Toward the end of the week the Sailfish fishing had slowed a bit probably cause the water did cool down a bit. Temperature was around 87 and cooled to 81 to 83 degrees. This seems to have triggered a slowdown in Sailfish and a upswing in Striped Marlin. The Stripers seem to like that cooler water and Sails prefer bathtub like water. With lots of food and bait in the water the Blue and Black Marlin are starting to be regular visitors in the. With warm water, food and bait in the water the Blue and Black Marlin are starting to be regular visitors in our fishing area here in Cabo and just in time for the Bisbee Tournaments coming up in October. Please remember if you are coming in October or November get your reservations in as we are going to get really busy with all the tournaments and activity going on in Cabo this time of year. BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around:
DORADO: Dorado fishing is really off the hooks with all the Dorado you want from Gray Rock to the Pump House about 3 miles off the beach, the Dorado are hitting lures, cut Ballyhoo and live bait and most fish are 12 to 25lbs. There is also lots of Dorado around in about every area of our fishing grounds with 1150, 95 spot and Gordo Banks areas all reporting lots of Dorado. One boat out at the 1150 area caught 2 big Dorado and both were about 45lbs a piece. They love this warm water and we know if the warm water holds we will all be eating some great Dorado dinners. Probably one of the best fish to eat just grill it with a little butter, garlic and a splash of lemon. What is really good is to sautee your garlic and add Cilantro to the mix and after grilling your Dorado pour a little bit of your sautee over your catch. GOOD STUFF!!!!!
TUNA: Lots of Tuna also showing up in our fishing grounds. The 95 spot seems to be producing Tuna with a few in the 50lbs pound range but most are smaller 12 to 20lbs we are noticing. The Tuna are hitting cedar plugs and king busters mostly so have some of those ready cause right now the Tuna are kinda all over and you never know when you will be running into them and that's a good thing otherwise it wouldn't be fishing!!!!
TUNA RECIPE: Yellowfin Tuna with Grilled Pineapple Salsa
Ingredients
1 pineapple, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch-thick rounds
6 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1/4 cup minced red bell pepper
1/4 cup rice vinegar
2 jalapenos, seeded and minced
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh cilantro
1 1/2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
Four 6-ounce yellowfin tuna steaks
1 tablespoon Creole Seasoning
Fresh cilantro sprigs, for garnish
Directions
1. Step 1
Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high.
2. Step 2
Brush both sides of the pineapple slices with 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Place the pineapple on the grill and cook, rotating the slices occasionally, until slightly softened and nicely marked by the grill, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from the grill and allow to cool to room temperature.
3. Step 3
Dice the pineapple slices (discard the tough core portions), and place the dice in a medium nonreactive bowl. Add the red onion, bell pepper, rice vinegar, jalapenos, lime juice, cilantro, and minced garlic. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons of the remaining olive oil, and stir well to combine. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of the salt, and set the salsa aside.
4. Step 4
Season the tuna steaks with the remaining 1 teaspoon salt and the Original Essence, and brush with the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Place the steaks on the grill, rotating them 45 degrees after 2 minutes. Cook for 2 minutes longer. Turn to the other side, grilling the steaks for an additional 2 minutes, or until medium-rare. Remove the tuna from the heat and let it rest briefly before serving it with the Grilled Pineapple Salsa. Garnish with cilantro sprigs.
INSHORE: The Pangas inshore have been doing pretty good running into Roosterfish, Tuna, Dorado and some Snappers. The best fishing inshore is up by in the area of the Light House and Pump Station. Lots of smaller Dorado , basically all you want to catch in the last few days and they are taking about everything you throw at them. Some Roosterfish reported being caught close to shore also off of Solmar beach all the way to the end of the Pedregal. In the rocks off of the Pedregal there has been quite a few Snappers caught using cut bait in about 35 to 50 feet of water. The Panga guys know these areas pretty good and can put you in the fish if you like inshore fishing. Just tell the captain what you want to try for whether its Groupers or Snappers using cut bait is good for both in the rocks off of Pedregal.
WAHOO: I did hear of some Wahoo being caught but not a lot and we did not catch any on our boats.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
