Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.

We did see a slight swing downward about the middle of the week where we WATER: Teperatures have been fluxuating a bit from area to area but mostly on the Pacific side we are seeing cooler water which is really normal and nothing out of the ordinary mostly nice blue water out there, which the fish love. Down around Gordo Banks water is about 85 degrees and up around the Pump Station on the Pacific its aroud 80 to 81 degrees. So a slight difference but a little bit.
WEATHER: It cant get any better weather than what we have had over this week. So typical October weather with cooler nights and a light breeze to day time temperatures in the mid to ladder 80,s. Lows in the lower to mid 70,s. Not a lot of wind making irt really good fishing weather and the guys are not getting beat up from the swells. This makes for a much more pleasant fishing experience.
BILLFISHING: Well the Marlin fishing really off the hooks this past week with plenty of marlin for everyone with lots of boats reporting landing 1 to 3 marlin per boat. Most Marlin being landed are up around the Pump Station all the way to Golden Gate. There have been reports of some big Blue Marlin being caught in the 300 to 400lbs range. Just in time for the tournaments. Most all of the good action for Marlin is on the Pacific side and anglers are catching them with lures and pitching live bait. Lots of action mostly concentrated 1 to 4 miles off shore on the pacific side where the water is cooler. It seems the Striped Marlin have been in abundance closer to shore on the Pacific side in the cooler water. I also did hear of a 350lbs Black Marlin caught by another fishing fleet caught on a black and silver lure. Along with all the Marlin the Sailfish have been all over the place also so if you don't catch a Marlin there is a good chance of catching a Sailfish. So the fish of this past week was Billfish with more of them caught this past week than any other species. An great week for fishing in Cabo Marlin everywhere!!!!
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around:
DORADO: Literally the Dorado are all over the place we have been knocking them dead. Most of Dorado are on the smaller level but we are seeing lots and lots of 20 to 30 pound fish being caught. The fish are mostly staying tight to shore and hitting cut up skip jacks or chunck ballyhoo. Lures are producing also big time.Its hot on the Pacific side but were catching them all over the place. You should book your trip soon as you will never experience fishing like this it has really been wide open for Dorado and Marlin.

Spend any time in Baja California and you will soon learn that the Mexicans know how to cook seafood; it ain't all enchiladas and ground beef. I caught the dorado (also known as mahi mahi or dolphinfish) in the Sea of Cortez, so I thought it only appropriate to make a Mexican dish with it.
.And while mahi mahi is not hard to find in the market, you can substitute yellowtail, striped bass, white seabass, a big snapper, grouper, largemouth bass, or even catfish. You want a pretty firm fish here, and not an especially fatty one.
Serves 4
2-3 pounds mahi mahi
1 large onion, thinly sliced into half-moons
Salt and black pepper
3 garlic cloves, chopped
2-5 fire-roasted jalapenos, preserved in vinegar (or pickled jalapenos)
1 1/2 to 2 cups of cilantro
1/3 cup lime juice or lemon juice
2 tablespoons white vine vinegar
8 tablespoons olive oil
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cut the fish into serving portions and salt it well. Set it aside.
3. Pour 2 tablespoons olive oil into a saute pan and saute the onions over high heat until they get a little charred on the edges.
4. Find a casserole or lidded pot just large enough to hold all the fish. Pour the lime juice into the pot and lay down half the onions.
5. Put the fish pieces on the onions, then lay the rest of the onions over the fish and drizzle over 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
6. Cover with foil or the lid. Bake for 25-35 minutes, depending on how thick the fish pieces are.
7. Meanwhile, buzz the garlic, jalapenos, white wine vinegar and all but 2 tablespoons of the cilantro in a food processor until it is pureed. Drizzle in the remaining olive oil with the motor running.
8. When the fish is cooked, serve by laying down some of the cilantro sauce and topping each plate with some onions. The fish goes on the onions, and you can top with a little more sauce and the remaining chopped cilantro.
TUNA: We had a great week last week for Tuna and this week it has been slow for Yellow Fin. Its been real spotty with one big Tuna reported caught and it was 150lbs and then we had a few 50 and 60 pounders but really no large schools like last week
INSHORE: Great inshore fishing with lots of smaller dorado 12 to 15lbs and some good Roosterfish catches this past week. The Roosters are 20 to 30lbs with a few going to 35lbs. If you were to rent a Panga and stay close to shore I guarantee you would do pretty good. You could land anything from Grouper, Snappers, Roosterfish, Dorado, Striped Marlin so honestly quite a variety to choose from inshire.
WAHOO: Multiple reports of Wahoo this week with one Wahoo reported at 86lbs and I did hear other reports of Wahoo this week, actually more this week than we have had in a while.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
