Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jc Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 11/10/13 to 11/17/13
Stop by Our Office for up to Date Fishing Report.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
Keep in Mind the Whales are starting to show up!!!
WATER: The water has been really nice over this last week. Here is some average temperatures throughout the year. Out temperatures are perfect for striped Marlin so this is why we have an abundance of Striped Marlin in this area.

• January: 73ºF | 22.7ºC
• February: 72ºF | 22.2ºC
• March: 72ºF | 22.2ºC
• April: 72ºF | 22.2ºC
• May: 72ºF | 22.2ºC
• June: 73ºF | 22.7ºC
• July: 79ºF | 26.1ºC
• August: 82ºF | 27.7ºC
• September: 82ºF | 27.7ºC
• October: 81ºF | 27.2ºC
• November: 79ºF | 26.1ºC
• December: 75ºF | 23.8ºC
Right now temperatures are about average being in the ladder 70,s in most areas. We will notice some cooler temperatures creeping in next month.

WEATHER: The weather has been really nice as we have had a few partly overcast days this past week but in general really nice. We did have some sprinkles last night but nothing to worry about as most people did not even know it rained.

BILLFISHING: Well the town has calmed down with most of all the major tournaments behind us but it seems as the town is still pretty busy with lots of activity still going on. It seems as if the good fishing has moved farther north up off of Los Arcos and all the way up to Pescadero. The Marlin fishing has still been good with some Blue Marlin being landed this past week. There have been a few big ones caught this week. One at 450lbs and two more I know about were respectively at 300lbs and 190lbs. So, a good week for Big Blue Marlin. The Striped Marlin bite has also been really decent with the Los Arcos area again being the spot. Most captains report going out about 5 miles offshore from Arcos and using live bait and lures and then I also heard that some Striped Marlin were caught off the Light House drifting live bait. So the fish are here and expect more of the good fishing this coming week.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around:
DORADO: Still ok Dorado fishing being reported at about a half mile off the beach. The Dorado are hitting lures and live bait . They are being caught in numbers at about a half mile off the beach also a few Dorado being caught on jetheads.

Special Tips on what to do with your catch!!!
You just went out for the sportfishing trip of a lifetime and are heading back to the marina with an ice chest full of Dorado and Wahoo, but you are unsure of what you are going to do with them. What can you do with our fish? Here is a breakdown of several different things you can do with your catch, from eating the meat to hanging it on your wall.
Catch and Release: If you are fishing for marlin, it is recommended that you use a catch and release method of fishing to help the local conservation efforts. Cabo San Lucas is one of the world's top fishing spots and we like to keep it that way by letting the big fish go. If it is your first time fishing or you catch the marlin of a lifetime, it is acceptable and legal to bring back in one billfish. If you only want it for a wall trophy, the technology we have today is capable of creating exact replica wall mounts that will last much longer and let your fish live.
Clean and Fillet Your Fish: The fish that you end up bringing back to shore will need to be cleaned, filleted, and thrown on ice immediately. If your charter did not already include the cost of cleaning in the total price, you will have to pay it yourself. Dorado, Wahoo, Yellowfin and other smaller gamefish will cost around $2 per fish and if you bring back a large billfish it will cost anywhere from $12-$30 depending on the size.
Take to a Restaurant: One of the most popular things to do with your fish is to take some of it to either your resort's on-site restaurant or a local restaurant that will cook it up for you just how you like it. You will be charged a small fee, but being able to eat your fresh catch of the day while enjoying a Cabo San Lucas sunset is one of the most rewarding experiences, and best tasting too! Your charter will have some good recommendations for restaurants that will cook it for you.
Smoking and Freezing: If your charter doesn't include the freezing of your catch in the price, they will offer the service to you once you get back to the marina. Prices range from $2-$30 per fish for your charter to fillet and freeze your fish but if you want them to vacuum pack it there will be an additional $1.50 per pound fee. Smoking adds great flavor to your fish and is around $5 per pound which should include vacuum packing for you to take home.
Taking Fish Home: Unless you drove your own vehicle down, you are probably going to have to cart the fish back on the airplane. Luckily, the San Jose Del Cabo airport is very familiar with people bringing back fish so it shouldn't be a problem. Don't worry about bringing an ice chest down with you to Cabo, you can easily purchase one at the local grocery store or Wal-Mart. Buy the cooler, throw in your frozen fish packed tightly, then wrap the chest up really good with duct tape to make sure you don't lose your fish when they are being thrown around under the plane. As long as your fish are thoroughly frozen, it is not necessary to add ice (unless you are traveling a very long distance). Most airlines have a 44 pound restriction on what you can bring back but you can bring more as long as you are willing to pay the $1 per pound excess baggage fee. Do not forget that this ice chest will count as one of your checked bags, so do not bring two checked bags down to Cabo with you because then you will have to figure out what to do with the rest of your luggage. To play it safe, always check with your specific airline policies ahead of time so there are no surprises once you get to the airport.
Taxidermy: All captains should be using the catch and release method for marlin fishing but that doesn't mean you can't have a taxidermy made of your prize fish. Before you release your fish, get an accurate measurement of the size and take a few good photos. When you get back stateside, look up a reputable taxidermist and send in the photos and measurements for them to create an exact replica made of fiberglass. The fiberglass replica will look great and last much longer than a real billfish skin, and promotes the preservation of the beautiful creatures.
TUNA: Good number of Tuna are around this past week just find the Porpoise and you will run into the Tuna. The Tuna are being found outside the Golden Gate and up and around San Jamie. Look for the the birds swooping the Porpoise and jack pot.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has just been ok really nothing special this past week. Anytime the Sierra bite should start and we are really hoping that starts to happen in December. When the water temperature starts to fall we will start to get into the Sierra action. This week from Gray Rock to the Pump House has been where the action has been happening. The Rooster fish were in the picture this past week with a few nice ones caught off of Solmar Hotel area.
WAHOO: The Wahoo bite has been pretty good with a few large fish pulled in the week. It has actually been pretty good for Wahoo over the last 3 weeks really more than I have seen in the past years.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
