Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jc Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 12/30/13 to 1/5/14
Stop by Our Office for up to Date Fishing Report.

Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.

WEATHER: The weather has been pretty decent this past week. We have had a few over cast days like today as I write the report its cloudy and cooler. It was also like this yesterday and I suppose it cant be perfect everyday in Cabo. Today we will reach a high of 79 degrees and a low of 59, actually pretty comfortable weather.
HISTORICAL MONTHLY AVERAGES FOR JANUARY
The information presented below gives detailed historical monthly average weather conditions along with exceptional weather occurrences. To maintain relevance to current weather trends the displayed information has been calculated using data collected over the past two decades. The climate profile is taken from closest available data source to Cabo San Lucas.
Temperature
Throughout the month of January daytime temperatures will generally reach highs of around 26°C that's about 79°F. At night the average minimum temperature drops down to around 16°C, that's 61°F.
In recent times the highest recorded temperature in January has been 35°C that's 95°F, with the lowest recorded temperature 8°C, about 46°F.
Relative Humidity
The average daily relative humidity for January is around 55%.
Heat Index
The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it feels when relative humidity is added to actual air temperature. From this a comfort level is calculated providing categories on how heat conditions might adversely affect someone.
Comfort Levels: Given average maximum temperatures and humidity levels generally you should not anticipate any discomfort from heat (see heat index for more information).
Precipitation
The average monthly amount of precipitation has been recorded at around 12 mm, that's 0 inches. Throughout the month you can expect to see rain or drizzle falling on 2 days of the month.
Estimated Hours of Sunshine per Day
We calculate sunshine hours per day using our past forecast data. For January expect the sun to shine for an average of 9 hours per day. This represents the average number of hours in the daytime that the sun is visible and not obscured by cloud e.g. the average number of hours the sun is actually out and shining. Note we calculate hours of sunshine per day using our past forecast data, not observation data, thus it is an estimate and not actual.
Wind
The average daily wind speed in January has been around 15 km/h, that's the equivalent to about 9 mph, or 8 knots. In recent years the maximum sustained wind speed has reached 83 km/h, that's the equivalent of around 52 mph, or 45 knots.
Fog
On average the month of January is not affected by foggy conditions.
WATER: Current Water Temperature in Cabo San Lucas for today is: 72°F
BILLFISH: Well the town has finally slowed down a bit but lots of Marlin still being caught as the fishing remains still pretty good. The Light House has been seeing all the good action about 2 miles offshore and drifting baits at about 160ft has been producing quite a few Marlin also good numbers of Striped Marlin up at the San Jamie banks and the Golden Gate areas. The fish in theses areas were being caught by pitching live bait and slow trolling ballyhoo with some even being caught on lures. What we did see was some nice size fish being caught with some Stripers tipping the scales at 200lbs.
DORADO: The Dorado fishing has remained really good with most being caught from the Light House up towards the Golden Gate but most of the fish are scattered out and being caught in pairs not in big schools like normal or like last month. Most of the fish are taking lures and some are being caught on ballyhoo. The Dorado fishing has been pretty good all season and is still looking good.

From The Admirals Kitchen
Grilled Whole Sierra with Lemon, Oregano, and Olives
Makes 4 servings
A whole Sierra is about 2 feet long, so you will just be able to fit it on an angle in a large rectangular gas grill or a wide oven; see cooks' notes, below. You might want to measure your grill (or oven) before choosing a fish to make sure you'll have enough room.
Active time: 45 min Start to finish: 1 hr
Ingredients
• 1/2 teaspoon finely grated fresh lemon zest
• 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives (1 1/4 oz), cut into slivers
• 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh oregano plus 6 large sprigs
• 1 (3 1/4- to 3 1/2-lb) cleaned whole Sierra (with head and tail)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 6 (1/4-inch-thick) lemon slices
• Special equipment: a 22-inch grill; kitchen string
Preparation
Whisk together zest, lemon juice, and salt and pepper to taste, then add olive oil in a stream, whisking until combined well. Whisk in olives and chopped oregano.
Make 1-inch-long slits at 2-inch intervals down middle of fish on both sides with a sharp paring knife, then brush fish all over with vegetable oil and season with salt and pepper. Season fish cavity with salt and pepper, then evenly distribute 3 lemon rounds and 3 oregano sprigs in cavity. Close cavity, then evenly arrange remaining 3 lemon rounds and 3 oregano sprigs on top of fish and tie fish closed with string at 2-inch intervals, securing lemon slices and oregano sprigs to fish.
Prepare grill for cooking. If using a charcoal grill, open vents on bottom of grill, then light charcoal. Charcoal fire is medium-hot when you can hold your hand 5 inches above rack for 3 to 4 seconds. If using a gas grill, preheat burners on high, covered, 10 minutes, then reduce heat to moderate.
Grill fish on lightly oiled grill rack, covered only if using gas grill, 15 minutes. Turn fish over using a metal spatula and tongs, then grill until just cooked through, about 15 minutes more.
Transfer fish to a large platter using 2 metal spatulas, then cut and discard string. Serve fish with sauce.
TUNA: The Tuna fishing has been pretty slow over the last 2 weeks. I havent heard of a lot of Tuna being caught this past week. We were waiting for the Tuna pins to show up again but we haven't seen them in like 3 weeks.
INSHORE: The fishing inshore has been really good for some Dorado, Marlin and lots of Sierras which we knew the Sierra fishing was going to really take off and it has with the Sierras being caught on hootchies from the Solmar up to Migrino and as a matter of fact I fished yesterday and the Sierras did not seem to want to hit the hootchies so we cut up strips of Caballito and that did the trick as my wife caught one of the biggest Sierras I have ever seen. We landed the fish next to the beach just below the Light House using wire and no weight just cut bait and drifting about 100 yards and then we just went back and did it again having some really good luck each time.

SIERRA ( SPANISH MAKERAL)

The Sierra Mackerel is described as a mini Wahoo for its shape, its fast swimming behavior and those signature teeth. This is the one fish that requires a wire leader as their choppers will slice through mono-filament like a hot knife through butter. The Sierra swims and feeds over cobbly structure from a few feet to several hundred yards off the coastline. They will hit bait, trolled Rapala type lures and flies with enthusiasm. Flies cast long and allowed to sink to just above the surface of the rocks will get the attention of the Sierra. Their take is forceful and their run, strong and fast. Their teeth are designed to slice through leader and coupled with their speed they have a good chance of escaping. Their impressive runs and their size make them a perfect fish for light tackle and fly angling. When they're swimming thickly, dozens can be caught and landed in a few hours. They hit best in the early morning hours.
WAHOO: I haven't heard of the numbers of Wahoo we were seeing as I think the Wahoo season is slowing down, but what a season it has been this year with this year being one of the best I have seen in 20 years.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
