Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WEATHER: Still pretty warm and not a big change in weather from last week. The weather has been actually a little warmer than normal for this time of year. What winter we have here in Cabo has been really nonexistent so far this year with temperatures above average. I would say today it was pushing 85 to 90 degrees.
WATER: Cooler water temperatures this past week hasn't changed the good fishing we are still catching Dorado, Tuna and of course Striped Marlin.
TUNA: The Tuna are still around this week but scattered out you just have to put in the miles looking for them but can be found by finding the Porpoise and you want to get to the school first because after all the boats show up the bite will really slow down. The Tuna have been found from the Jamie Banks inside and outside from 18 to 25 miles off shore. They seem to be landing the fish by using cedar plugs and king busters. If you look for the Birds and Porpoise your bound to find the Tuna.
BILLFISH: Well the Marlin fishing just don't seem to let up with hot Striped Marlin fishing continuing throughout last week. It has been really fantastic as our own Bob Marlin boat has been landing lots of fish and one day we hooked up on 7 Marlin and ended up landing 4 fish in the 100lbs to 130lbs pound range. We went up to the Golden Gate on the pacific and we were getting lucky drifting live bait, some on lures and some that were tailing we pitched them live bait and we were getting hook ups. Another good area was 4 miles off the Light House but the hot spot for the week was Golden Gate area.
DORADO: The Dorado fishing is has slowed big time with the water temperatures dropping about 4 degrees and we are thinking the Dorado fishing might be about done for the season.

Grilled Yellowtail with Herb Butter
Yellowtail seems to be a great fish to chuck on the grill and its darkish, meaty flesh takes on any flavor really well it's hard to mess up Grilled Yellowtail (except if you overcook it)
The great thing about having a fish braai or even preparing a piece of fish for dinner is that it literally takes a few minutes to cook. With fish, like this Grilled Yellowtail, I find that less is better. The simpler you keep your recipe the better the outcome is.
I decided to flavor my Grilled Yellowtail with beautiful lemon butter, salt and pepper and a wonderful mix of fresh herbs to give extra aroma and taste to the dish. It turned out great, and with a couple of friends, a few glasses of wine and some mouthwatering sides the Grilled Yellowtail didn't last long.
INGREDIENTS FOR GRILLED YELLOWTAIL:
1.2 kg Yellowtail - butterflied (a good fishmonger will clean it up real nice)
2 lemons
1 cup of melted butter
Salt and black pepper
A handful of curly parsley, chopped fine
A handful of chives, chopped fine
A handful of dill, chopped fine
Foil
METHOD FOR GRILLED YELLOWTAIL:
Open the butterflied fish and rest it skin down on the foil.
Add the juice of one lemon to the melted butter.
Season with salt and black pepper and brush half the lemon butter over the fish.
Arrange the fish on a roster it's just so much easier to handle on a hot braai.
Cook on a hot grill (skin down) for about 10 minutes until the fish is hot right through. By now you can test if the fish is done by gently lifting the flesh with a fork. If it flakes it's done.
Add the chopped herbs to the remaining butter and brush over the hot fish, drizzle with more fresh lemon juice from the other lemon, season, remove from heat and serve with your choice of sides.
The Yellowtail's flesh has become so tender and buttery, and the flavor of the herbs made this dish a real treat.
INSHORE: A few more good reports of the Yellowtail starting to show up in our area. The fish were caught jigging iron up and around Rancho Migrano and a few being caught off the rock piles near the Pedregal. Some Groupers using cut bait up around Migrano and also some reports of Pompano off the Light House on little jigs with a piece of cut bait in about 120ft of water. My friend caught 23 the other day and had a great time and lots of good eating.
Still all the Sierras you want again throughout this past week with the hottest area being the Solmar to the Light House and as far north as Migrano has been really good. We are catching the fish on Rapalas, hootchies and stripped bait in tight to the beach. The Panga action has been really good for Snapper and Groupers close to shore in 40ft to 60 ft of water in the rocks using cut bait.
WAHOO: This week a slowed Wahoo bite reported compared to last week. We were landing them on lures and jet heads with some in the 50lbs to 60lbs range with a few being landed at Grey Rock on jet heads and down rigged rapalas in about 200ft of water but that has slowed this week.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
