Hurricane Norbert Side Swipes Cabo Closing Port!!!
Port is open again!!
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Well lets get on with the fishing report for this past week.
WEATHER: Well Hurricane Norbert did close our port here in Cabo for about 4 days so we don't have fish information for those days, The storm more or less side swiped us here in Cabo with some pretty strong winds to about 55 to 60 miles an hour and possible gusts to 65 miles an hour. The storm did knock out the lights on a couple different occasions but they were back on after 2 to 3 hours. Along with the rain did come some heavy rain at times flooding some streets and low lying areas. We actually lucked out really as we didn't get the brunt of the storm as that was out to sea 100 miles. Well its early September and we don't need any more of that tropical weather. I am sitting here writing the report and its sunny and mostly clear so I thought I would throw on a little country music and I am taken back to a couple little Honkey Tonks I stumbled into in Bakersfield. I wonder if I am welcome there anymore?
WATER: It looks as if the water temperatures are pretty much how they were the week before. I thought this storm would push in some really warm water but it looks like last week according to Tempbreak. So pretty much the same with cooler waters on the Pacific side and when I say cooler I mean cool from 81 to warmer to 86 or 86 so not a major difference from Sea of Cortez and Pacific but a few degrees. TUNA: There were some big Tunas caught before the storm with one tipping the scales at 270 lbs according to Griceldas Smokehouse. I don't know when Mexico is going to wake up and start protecting the sport fishing and all the tourist dollars that come into the area because of fishing. It seems no one is thinking of the long term affects this will have on the tourist and sport fishing industry. Not only that the sport fishing and tourist industry employee many, many families here in Los Cabos
BILLFISH: Fishing was real good up till the storm arrived with lots of Striped Marlin and Sailfish being caught. There were also reports of Blue Marlin caught first part of the week.
DORADO: Dorado fishing was decent up till the storm with some nice ones being brought back to dock. Some in the 30 to 40lbs range but still a lot of smaller ones also. Please if you are catching baby Dorado throw them back for another day. You will be surprised how fast they will grow over a year. If they aren't over 10 pounds you might think about throwing them back.
INSHORE: High surf over this past week has hurt inshore bite but it is calm now we expect the action to pick up again the coming week. It was good before storm with lots of Roosters, Skip Jack and Needle Fish being caught. Really good action for the kids.
WAHOO: It was great till storm shoed up but we expect good action this coming week.The 95 spot to Rancho Migrano has been the areas that are producing. The Wahoo fishing has picked up and we did land a 60lb fish the week before on one of our boats and you can see the a picture of the fish on the home page of my website.

Pan-Seared Tuna with Avocado, Soy, Ginger, and Lime
Ingredients
2 big handfuls fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
1/2 jalapeno, sliced
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 garlic clove, grated
2 limes, juiced
2 tablespoons soy sauce
Pinch sugar
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 (6-ounce) block sushi-quality tuna
1 ripe avocado, halved, peeled, pitted, and sliced
Directions
In a mixing bowl, combine the cilantro, jalapeno, ginger, garlic, lime juice, soy sauce, sugar, salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Stir the ingredients together until well incorporated.
Place a skillet over medium-high heat and coat with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Season the tuna generously with salt and pepper. Lay the tuna in the hot oil and sear for 1 minute on each side to form a slight crust. Pour 1/2 of the cilantro mixture into the pan to coat the fish. Serve the seared tuna with the sliced avocado and the remaining cilantro sauce drizzled over the whole plate.
Hurricane Norbert?
Tropical Storm Norbert won't make a major landfall on the U.S. coast, but that isn't stopping the tropical system from making a major impact on Mexico.
Fishing villages along the Mexican coast were dealt a serious blow by high surf, winds and rain from Norbert. More than 1,250 homes in Comondú, Mexico were damaged by Norbert, after waves burst through a seawall and inundated a fishing village.
Thousands of others were evacuated as Norbert approached. More than 2,000 people were evacuated in Comondú, Los Cabos and La Paz as of Saturday due to concerns over Norbert's impact.
Baja California Sur state Gov. Marcos Covarrubias urged people in vulnerable areas to evacuate and said travelers should stay off highways as the storm passed by, The Associated Press reports. He said most government services would be closed or restricted. Firefighters rescued several people from vehicles stranded in flooded streets, said Wenceslao Petit, Public Safety Director in Cabo San Lucas.
Ports in the area popular with U.S. tourists remained closed to navigation, and police officers were sent to the evacuated neighborhoods to prevent looting, Petit added.
Schools in Los Cabos and La Paz were closed on Friday.
Norbert was the ninth hurricane of a busy eastern Pacific hurricane season and will eventually have some peripheral impacts in parts of the Southwest U.S.
BEWARE: Please beware of the guys in the street selling boat charters. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report.
