Capt. Jerry Chapman
July 24, 2012
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jc Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 7/16/12 to 7/23/12

. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
DORADO SHOOTOUT AND BISBEE TOURNAMENT : The highly popular fishing competition, the East Cape Dorado Shootout, has reached its 8th edition. Its popularity results from the small registration fee and attractive prizes. This year, the registration fee costs only $400 for a team of 4 anglers. The big prize is a brand new 4×4 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. The competition also comes with numerous side jackpots of $200, $300, $500 and $1,000. During the 2011 tournament, the jackpots reached to about $60,000. To win the first prize, all you have to do is catch the biggest dorado . Teams in second and third place, and those who catch the biggest tuna or wahoo will also receive a prize. July 19th- 3:00pm – 6:00pm, Teams can check-In and sign-up at Hotel Palma de Cortez.
• July 20th- 3:00pm – 6:00pm, Teams can check-In and sign-up at Hotel Palmas de Cortez.
• July 21st- 7:00am: Dorado Shoot Out! Weigh- in at Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Scale will be open at 1:00pm and will close at 4:00pm Sharp.
• July 21st- 7:00pm: Awards dinner at Hotel Palmas de Cortez.
The Bisbee East Cape offshore fishing tournament will be held July 24 – 28 this coming week.
WATER: Seas have been fairly calm .The water tempeatures have been 85 to 86 on the Sea of Cortez side and 82 to 84 on the Pacific side and it seems to be just the way the fish like it.
WEATHER: July weather has set in and you know what that means. Tempeatures in the 90,s with humidity in the mid 70,s. Last couple nights did cool down a little as we had a nice cooler breeze come in.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with some Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
FISHING: Well here we go with a new week and I want to tell you its some of the best fishing I have seen in years. Large numbers of Blue, Blacks and Stripped Marlin being caught on ballyhoo and live bait. This has been probably the most productive week we have had for Marlin the whole season. The Blues were upwards of 300 to 500 pounds. There were so many Stripped Marlin and even Sailfish that it was a big time work out for all anglers who were lucky to be out this week. Lots of the action for Blues was seen in the area of the 95 and the Stripped Marlin were more north, on the pacific side, stretching to the Golden Gate. Our own Bob Marlin vessel on Saturday caught 1 Stripped Marlin, 1 65 pound Dorado a 270 pound Blue Marlin and a bunch of Tuna. What a day! Yesterday on the Bob Marlin we landed 9 Dorado with 2 over 60 pounds and 2 Stripped Marlin. Today was good also with 11 Tuna landed, a Blue Marlin and 7 Dorado. Lots of the Marlin are being caught 2 to 6 miles offshore and we are catching marlin off our panga also. So as you can see the fishing is wide open and you better get down to Cabo before it cools .
TUNA: Seems as if the Tuna are here in numbers. Al you want Tuna from 15 pounds to 35 with some being landed up to 60 to 80 pounds. We are still using spreader bars, cedar plugs and live bait. The Tuna have been being caught 12 to 15 miles off shore in the porpoise.
DORADO: The Dorado fishing is great this week . Lots of big Dorado caught in the 60 pound range over the last few days. The fish are scattered out from the 95 to the Golden Gate and they seem to be moving from one area to the other, but we know there out there and if your fishing in Cabo you will definitely have a good fishing day over the next few days.
WAHOO: Wahoo fishing has picked up this past week. Various boats reporting Wahoo in the 50 pound range.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has been very productive with Sailfish and Stripped Marlin being caught. Small Tuna and Dorado are around and being caught from the Arch to the Pump Station. Even some Grouper were caught in this area. Amberjack fishing was good with some as large as 40 to 50 pounds. There are good amounts of Roosterfish being caught also.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don't even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don't even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don't care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don't have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
