Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report
FISHING REPORT 5/1/2012 to 5/7/2012

I wanted to wish everyone a good morning from Cabo San Lucas. Well the heat is starting to set in and temperatures have been in the mid 90,s over the last 2 or 3 days. We did have a little rain about 4 or 5 days ago, really just enough to settle the dust , but it was a good change.Cabos weather is like no other in the world, its always consistant and really cant be matched. Im not sure which is the better, the weather, or the fishing.Anyway lets move on the fishing report.
BAIT: Mackerel and Caballito are availiable and some Mullet fish Mullet costing about $3 per bait. Sardines are becoming few and far between. Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
FISHING: This past week have seen lots of Striped Marlin, although it has been tough to get them to bite. There has been lots of Squid in the water and the Marlin seem like they have been eating a lot.. The fish that we are catching seem to be around the 1150 on the Sea of Cortez side, about 17 to 22 miles out. The fish that are hitting have gone for some lures and live bait. Slow trolling rigged Ballyhoo has been productive. The seas have been 5 to 7ft with winds 10 to 15 knots and temperatures in the 90,s. The water temp in that area has been 76 to 77 with a few Dorado and Wahoo being caught with hardly any Tuna.
The water has started to change and warm water is moving in. The Gordo Banks area we are seeing blue water at 77 degrees to 74 degrees between San Jose and Cabo while right out in front of Arch, it is 72 degrees. The Pacific side off the Cape, we have 70 degrees below the San Jaime Banks and 68 degrees north of it. That colder water above the San Jaime is green, cold and dirty.
Inshore from the light house to pump station there has been a few Yellow Tail being caught jigging iron and down rigging with live bait from 160 to 180ft, in front of the Arch off Pedregal rocks. There was some big Rooster fish caught on our boats this past week with one weighing in at 50lbs and another at 35lbs. We were slow trolling live bait in front of the Solmar hotel to catch the Roosters.
Seems to be lots of smaller fish also in this area, hitting poppers and a fair amount of Sierras on hoochies and striped bait sardines, if you can find them. Speaking of smaller fish in this area, Amberjack and Jack Crevalle were also caught on our boats. There seemed to be some small Tuna and Dorado in this area off the Solmar also.
Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. Cabo San Lucas Fishing Forecast:
We expect with the warm water and weather in Cabo to see numbers of Dorado and Wahoo increase over the next 2 weeks. Great time to visit Cabo as there isnt as many tourist in town.
