Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
July 23, 2009
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

JULY 16TH TO 22ND, 2009

Overall Catch Success Rate 86%

BILLFISH: Blue marlin are here! We had a pretty impressive week for blues, the likes of which we have not seen in a long time. Six in total for Pisces even with very few anglers in town. Angler of the week was Johnny Mack Powers from Rockwall Texas, fishing with wife Stacie, Dad R.B, a sprightly 89 years old and grandaughters Presley and Molly, which just goes to show fishing is a family sport; the Powers family caught one striped marlin and four tuna their first day out, our only dorado of the week, a large 50 lb'er, their second day, 31 tuna their third day and then to top it all two blue marlin up to 250 lbs and two striped marlin, released their fourth day aboard "Bill Collector", earlier in the week they also fished "Spartacus". On July 20th Shahram and Brittany Bijan from Sausalito, Ca caught a 350 lb blue marlin, at the Herrradura with a blue and white lure, aboard "Adriana". Next day out "Ruthless" scored with a 300 lb blue marlin and 13 yellowfin tuna, at Destiladeras, for Bryan & Dannielle Neth fishing with friends from Mobile, Alabama. This same day, Ed and Brian Apramian from Dana Point, California, were thrilled to release three sailfish and boat five tuna, at the 11.50 spot and Redhill aboard "Andrea". July 21st saw the "Tracy Ann" release both a striped and blue marlin fifteen miles in front of Santa Maria for Dan Massouda and Pam Basinger from St Petersburg, Florida. Our last blue of the week was aboard "Andrea" for James and Josh Wilkes from Farmerville Louisiana, 12 miles out from Cabo Real. Striped marlin were active, making this speices the most frequently caught of the billfish family, with weights up to 180 lbs. Fifty seven percent of charters caught billfish, consisting of 17 striped marlin, 6 blue marlin and 4 sailfish, with all but three fish released.

OTHER SPECIES: Tuna catches were good this week with forty percent of boatws catching from one to thirty fish, usually on the small side at less than 20 lbs. We did see as few as large as 40 lbs but these were less numerous. The tuna were spread out being likely to be caught on the Pacific or Cortez. Cedar plugs were the best method to get a hook up but other lures worked too. Just one dorado this week. Inshore fair amounts of roosterfish, a few jack crevalles and a couple of yellowtail.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, air temps in the high 90's to 100 F but still fairly cool on the Pacific. Seas calm to moderate.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82- 87 F

BEST LURES: live bait for striped marlin, blue marlin assorted lures, tuna cedar plugs.
